R1 Turbo Fuel Pump
Guys when i upgrade my 2001 carbed r1 to add the turbo will i need to upgrade the fuel pump? it is currently a standard r1 fuel pump. I remember
someone saying I need a scavenge pump but am not 100% sure

Hi Ben,
You will only need a scavenge pump if your turbo is low, ive used one due to mine being borderline.
If you can get the turbo oil return above oil level you shouldn't need one.
standard pump wont be any good it will run out of fuel as soon as you hit boost!
You want a car or similar injection pump and a rising rate regulator (Malpassi regulator) as used on the Metro and Renault 5 turbo.

Thanks Dave. I have got the rising rate regulator just wasnt sure on the pump. I will have a look to see what pump is avaliable then. What wastegate
have you used?

Used a 38mm Tial wastegate wasn't room for an actuator.

Hi speak to malcom at mb customs he could supply you with the wright fuel pump depending on what power ie boost you will be running,
you will need to see fuel pressure around 38-40 psi at idle should be about it,
unless anyone says differently,

Its a carded R1 so it will need 2-3psi at idle

i will check what my carb'd engine is at idle but dont remember it being that low???
may be wrong ill check it tomo,
my zx10r is around 38-40 @ idle but as you say this is injection and see around 60 psi on boost

IIRC the standard pump with reg doesn't have a take-off. It's usual to have the fuel pressure set relative to boost otherwise if you run
more boost than fuel pressure you won't get an fuel flowing into the intake (not good)...
You can get cheap regs off Ebay for about 20-30 that even include pressure gauges so you know what's going on....

The engine will idle and off boost need ~3psi, if you then add 8 PSI boost this figure rises to 11psi, hence rising rate regulator.
This has a tap off the plenum, as boost pressure rises the fuel pressure follows.
You will need a pump to match the regulator, in general any EFI pump should do, car or bike.
By the time you have made an air tight box, purchased all the bits and bob's to make the carbs work, you will really need a rolling road tune it
may be cheaper, certainly more effective to junk the carbs, fit throttle bodies and inject, yiu can now use a wideband sensor to tune.

R1 injection pumps are all in tank pumps would probably work fine assuming the standard regulator isn't part of the pump, but that would mean
having your tank modified to fit one.

Cheers Dave thats what I thought. Looks like I will have to have a look on ebay then for an external injection pump from something.
