cbr600 engine
sgtbrierley901 - 6/2/08 at 02:20 PM

hi there
would an cbr 600 engine from an 1986 bike be any good in an mk indy?
thanks stuart

zxrlocost - 6/2/08 at 02:21 PM

hi no

sgtbrierley901 - 6/2/08 at 02:22 PM

ok
thanks
ill keep on looking then
what do you suggest?

Mr Whippy - 6/2/08 at 02:24 PM

I think if it has a chain drive it would not be suitable. It looks like only shaft outputs can be used in a front engined 7.

You could instead do a nice little single seater.

zxrlocost - 6/2/08 at 02:30 PM

hi any sports bike over 900cc with power over 125bhp

I thought most of the common engines were from chain driven bikes (Blade, R1, ZX10 etc). Don't you just replace the sprocket with a suitable flange to attach the prop shaft?

sgtbrierley901 - 6/2/08 at 02:32 PM

thanks for advice

Well if that was the case I'd have expected to see the cars with the engine fitted sideways but so far I've only noticed ones that were in line.

Eh? What planet are you on?How many shaft-drive R1s, Busas and Blades do you know of?

Anyway, a 600 wouldn't really cut it in a 7, especially not a 70bhp CBR6.

As zxrlocost said, any mtor over 900cc is a good start.

If you have a look at all of the BEC front-engine 7 owners photos on this site, you'll see that about 2% of engines were originally shaft-drive. The only one that springs to mind is BenB's Pan European-powered 7 (Stuart Taylor?).

tegwin - 6/2/08 at 02:45 PM

One CBR600 engine wouldnt be enough, but two might be

jambojeef - 6/2/08 at 02:53 PM

CBR6s have 100bhp but quite a small amount of torque.

You could use them in something very light as some of the Formula Student racers do to great effect but they are a little too peaky in their power delivery and low on torque for a 7 imho.

Best off to to use something more like a 1 litre engine from a sports bike or sports tourer - but thats a nother story.

Whippy - the vast majority of bike engines are chain drive and in order to run a propshaft for a RWD 7 style car a sprocket adaptor is used. This bolts to the splined output shaft where the front sprocket would have been on the bike and gives a common prop flange PCD for mounting to a custom prop.

Obviously the bike engine is turned through 90 degrees so that this moutning face points backwards towards the diff.

Take a look at the next car show or perhaps someone will post a pic?

worX - 6/2/08 at 02:57 PM

It is the torque that is the greatest negative (some of the modern 600's are in excess of 130 Hp)

Stick to your "litre" category bikes!

Steve

Huh?? R1, ZX12R, fireblade, Busa, ZZR1100, CBR1000 etc etc - all are chain drive!!

I think its more down to the lack of torque, weaker clutches and gearboxes that mean the smaller capacity engines are no good. They might be fine in a 300kg single seater but not a 500kg kitcar.

Edited to say should have read page 2 before posting

Then you'd have about as much power and torque as a carb'd R1, but with nearly double the weight.

Mr Whippy - 6/2/08 at 08:01 PM

ohhhh I see, I think I was getting mixed up with the chain direction.

Actually I think your arrow needs moving down a bit but we get the idea
Like your trumpets BTW

As for engine the car would drive but the performance wouldn't be anything like what you would hope for.
I'm a fan of the Blade although we shall see at Oulton when Jurbal has his R1 installed

You'll have to forgive Coose for putting the arrows in the wrong place - he's only a novice at this stuff, especially with the bike engines

Coose - 6/2/08 at 09:32 PM

Yeah, Steve's right!

The arrow was added yonks ago for some other reason and I can't for the life of me remember why....

And don't just look at the trumpets - have a good squint at the carbs. What you have there is a set of Keihin FCR41 flat slides. If Carlsberg made carbs those would be them! Retailing at around £1000 + VAT.
I thank you...

Crazy Eddie - 6/2/08 at 10:09 PM

OOOOOOOO I like

So actually the arrow was to highlight your nice carbs then

PS What happened to Mr Whippy??

I never really thought of running two 600s before. As mentioned there would be some disadvantages, but are there any advantages?

rf900rush - 6/2/08 at 11:33 PM

If your looking for budget don't forget the older engines.
Mine is Suzuki RF900 claimed 118bhp
others like:-

Yamaha FZR1000's
Kawazaki GPZ's
Honda CBR1000's
all got over 100bhp

big bonus is pre '95 no CAT required.

Cheap ones can be found but risk of being knackered.
Both my RF900's had duff 2nd gears, but fix one my self. both ran well.

But I would more than cry if I had a Busa go bang.

Benonymous - 7/2/08 at 08:24 AM

Wot about a GSXR 1100 motor from the oil/air cooled models? They had heaps of grunt and would be cheap as doorstops now. You just need some decent airflow.

PS Don't forget GixxerKart!

sgtbrierley901 - 7/2/08 at 12:14 PM

thanks for advice ok ill have to decide what to get all i know is i have to get rid of my dohc engine,
which engine is easiest for an novice to install and get running?
and preferably cheaper
thanks

No, I think it must've been something to do with the bike vacuum tap take-off.

I think Mr Whippy caught someone who was suffering PMT.....

Has Whippy been freed yet? Come back soon!
