Best Get My Finger OUT Then. updated (10/03/09)
jollygreengiant - 21/9/08 at 05:40 PM

I have been in the garage again today and I came out about an hour ago for dinner and socialising with the family (although the kids have gone out). But while browsing here I thought I would make a to do list for finishing the car and to give myself some targets.
This is what I came up with. :-

Adjust tracking.

Trim out cockpit. (In hand)

Trim out for SVA (23/03/2009).

Its all in no particular order, apart from the last item. So yes David you are right, very nearly there. Oh and no I haven't forgotten about the carpets.

What I think I shall do is as I get each job finished I shall come on here and remove that job from the list. This will give me a bit of incentive and people can nag me by U2U if I'm not getting the jobs done quickly enough for them. (doesn't mean I take any notice tho' )

After SVA
Paint wheels.

I wrote my `to do` list on the garage wall , then just crossed job's off as they were completed .
I found myself adding thing's to the list as fast as I was crossing stuff off as well

Yep got the list prominently displayed on the fridge so the kids/wife can give me grief to finish it as well.

Howlor - 21/9/08 at 07:52 PM

A weekends work there, crack on!

Danozeman - 21/9/08 at 08:02 PM

I have alist on the garage wall. Iv crossed off 3 and added 6 so far.

Paul (Notts) - 21/9/08 at 08:06 PM

These lists start to get stressful especially once you have a date for the SVA…

I got an old secondary glazing unit. Painted one side with white paint.
Reversed it and fixed it to the wall.
Instant cheapo whiteboard.
Just use marker board pens and brake cleaner to wipe off! (or a damp cloth)

They are still there 4 years on and I still use them for doing odd bits of maths, and measuring, Oh... and the odd reminder to buy or do something.

MautoK - 21/9/08 at 10:41 PM

...so that's the morning taken care of!

I'm just about to do your para 12:
'Adjust front wing stays, trial fit front wings, remove & paint. Final fit front wing stays & front wheel wings.'
If I get that done this week I'll be lucky!

wilkingj - 22/9/08 at 07:06 AM

It took me a whole day to fit each front mudguard. (Early Luego design)
They only just fit over a 205 tyre with about 0.5mm clearance (for SVA).

With Hindsight I would use the MK Indy ones.
They are not quite so stylish, (lumps in the side for the brackets) But they look a damn sight easier to fit.

ie the Bracket is a Single 90 degree bend over the wheel and not a progressive bend as with the curved guards.
They have to be easier to fit, then get straight and correctly positioned.

Updated today, photo's to follow towards the end of the week as I get more finished and maybe take it for a short test drive between the garage and the foot path (allegedly). Honest.

jollygreengiant - 18/11/08 at 12:25 PM

RIP.
It is with deep regret that I announce today the death of a dear family friend. At about 11:50am whilst working hard in the garage my good friend and trusted servant Angle Grinder died. I had hoped that it would see me through to the end, but alas it was not to be, with only one cut left to make to complete the exhaust it died.

The funeral will be some time this afternoon with full cutting, grinding and welding honours.

richard thomas - 18/11/08 at 11:46 PM

Hope you didn't try to give it the kiss of life.......

jollygreengiant - 23/11/08 at 06:58 PM

ho hum better get busy.

rusty nuts - 23/11/08 at 08:10 PM

Doubt that exhaust clamp will pass SVA Clive have a look at VW or Audi clamps , may be more suitable. Looking good .

richard thomas - 24/11/08 at 10:33 AM

Looks well Clive, keep it up!!

jollygreengiant - 25/1/09 at 02:19 PM

Bump to top.

Well I have been cracking on and it is mostly coming together. I have been thinking of one or two ideas whilst working away, as in plan, test, implement and do the job once.
Most of it has gone quite smoothly, in view of the fact that in reality I only have limited time on Saturdays and Sundays to actually get work done.
The sort of good news today is that I (think) have just done the last bit of welding today and thankfully the gas bottle lasted as it is very nearly empty (the gauge shows nowt but it is still supplying gas, just). Still no more until the next thing to do, what ever that might be.

A quick spray of paint, drill some holes and the seats can go in. Then trim up the tunnel top and that can go in finally.
Mark out the engine bay top rails drill holes and the bonnet will be fitted (apart from gluing on trim).
Also currently doing final fit on boot lid, getting the latches to fit nice and snug.

Looks like I had better start filling out paper work.

Oh yes, now all I need is a reliable source of Alley and some one who can fold it up for me to make the engine bay column/accelerator pedal cover and the duct/heat shield around the exhaust manifold in the engine bay. Plus a heat shield /sharp edge cover around the exhaust box. Any one know off access to these requirements around northamptonshire?

One other thing, any one locally got a set of punches suitably for chassis number stamping?

kelloggs - 25/1/09 at 06:35 PM

Hi clive I can help you with the number stamps will bring to the next northampton meeting if thats ok

jollygreengiant - 4/2/09 at 08:00 PM

This last week has been a bit stressful. I had a problem (manufacturing fault with my drivers seat, see post in anything else about manufacturer going the extra mile) so whilst I waited for them to sort out the problem I got on with finishing the prop tunnel cover (will post pics when fitted). However I got the drivers seat back today, so I got on with fitting it (just had 2 holes to drill and bolt it in. I wish I had a bigger garage, as there is not a lot of room on the drivers side). So here are the photo's of the finished fitting seats. I have tried out the seating position and it is ok (could have done with a couple of inches extra leg room but it is not bad.

Both seats
Both fitted

And a test fitting of the most important vehicle part

I am looking now to probably send off my SVA application sometime next week.

DanP - 4/2/09 at 11:15 PM

Those seats look smart! my girlfriend got a bit upset when she tried her seat out because there was a slight bum/seat size mismatch

jollygreengiant - 5/2/09 at 05:24 PM

Well as today I went home from work early, due to excessive snow and plonkers on the road, I made the most of it in the Garage. I fitted the prop shaft tunnel covers and made the lower dash stabiliser and fitted it. All this while my son was playing in the back garden (picture else where in the snowman thread).

So here is the tunnel cover

and
Tunnel cover 2

Just got to sort out gaiters now.

Is that the beer can cooler between the handbrake and gear lever? Looking good Clive.

It was a hole for the gear lever (with rear extension) but that fouled the prop shaft, so it became a hole that was going to be a can holder/change holder pot. However I just decided that it looked neater if I just covered it with a bolted down tax disc holder.

Hi Clive,
I retract last weeks email which you chose to ignore. Its looking good and close to being done. Get the forms in and get it tested!

jollygreengiant - 20/2/09 at 10:50 AM

SVA applied for.

Just rang VOSA and I have a 'Z' number, just awaiting a phone call or letter with a date now.

It's a number that I should quote to them should I have any further queries that I should need to direct to them prior to my being allocated an SVA slot. Although, they didn't have that much trouble finding me through my address. At first she wanted to know my chassis number (for one moment I did think of replying 4.5inches on a good day, but.....).
Basically that number says that I have been logged and am being progressed to the SVA station.

jollygreengiant - 24/2/09 at 04:54 PM

Oh er missus, what a day.

Couldn't get on web site yesterday cos I had to get a new keyboard this morning. I threw a glass of drink over it yesterday morning and all it would do (the computer) was boot to the BIOS screen, from which I couldn't exit except by switching OFF. Still 'hit 'appens. All better now. Best fun was that the MS driver wouldn't load, kept telling me that 256gig was not enough memmory. Sorted by down-loading an older driver (not 32bit).

Then while I was waiting for a parcel delivery (thank you again CBS) I assembled some bar stools that the wife had bought.

Still no delivery, so I made up the batter mix for tonight. Looks like I am going to do a lot of tossing tonight (pancakes, what did you think I meant).

12:30 still no delivery so I crashed for about an hour then the door bell went. I now have flexible hose between filler and tank (with necessary SVA paper work).

So then I went to bed. AT LAST.

Just drooping off (14:35) when my mobile rang.

'Hello is that Clive, its Allan here.
I've got your paper work here in front of me, so how about the 23rd or 24th.'

"The 23rd will be fine."

'Ok then we will see you at 08:30 on Monday the 23rd of March at Nottingham then.'

SO, that's me done trying to sleep today then. I'm toworried/hyper now.

Oh and I'm only on here at the mo cos I'm waiting for some epoxy glue to go off.

PANIC TIME...............................................

Paul (Notts) - 24/2/09 at 07:09 PM

Had my SVA at Nottingham. Allan did everything possible to help me pass first time. Including fixing an oil leak from the pump.

Good luck

Steve Lovelock - 24/2/09 at 07:45 PM

Excellent, that gives you plenty of time to cr*p yourself and drive your family, friends and anybody you come into contact with mad!

Tee hee

rusty nuts - 24/2/09 at 07:50 PM

Loads of time! Who need sleep? No pressure , we expect a first time pass.

jollygreengiant - 1/3/09 at 04:53 PM

Ok then, I've tried to be busy, sometimes failing but this is progress to date.

First of all be concentrating on getting bonnet fitted & finished (apart from minor blemish & final cleaning) & this has meant getting busy with the latest creation with the help of the usually Ally Guru Trev D. As I have my exhaust exiting over the top rail that meant a cut out in the bonnet, so to try and keep it neat looking and to aid the exit of extremely hot air out of the engine bay (as well as protecting from the major cause of vehicle fires - brake fluid contact with manifold) I asked THE Trev to make me a 2 piece cover that finished up like this.
exhaust heat shield 1
exhaust heat shield 1

and
exhaust heat sheild 2
exhaust heat sheild 2

This gives a bonnet line looking like this
OS bonnet & shield
OS bonnet & shield

and from the rear
[img]http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/upload/01032009131.jpg[img]

I have also finished bits at the rear, Boot cover
Boot Cover Finished
Boot Cover Finished

and fuel filler
Fuel Filler cap finished
Fuel Filler cap finished

oh and interior gaiters now fitted, just want tweeking
Gaiters Fitted
Gaiters Fitted

So this afternoon I started looking at front wheel arches, however, with the tyres that I shall be fitting (same as what is already fitted but 45% ratio, I am convinced that they just aren't going to look right, so I think I shall have to order some wide ones from Carbon mods.
'edit bit' - Just ordered the wheel arches they will be here on Friday.

Now its time for food & then sleep followed by work and more thinking about options tomorrow after work.

[Edited on 3/3/09 by jollygreengiant]

wilkingj - 5/3/09 at 09:25 AM

Remember to make the mudguards cover the right areas, and if they done (like mine didnt) make some mudflaps like I did...
I really must change them for some nicer ones.

Also the flaps help when it rains or there are wet roads... It reduces the amount you get all over you!

Good Luck with the SVA

jollygreengiant - 10/3/09 at 07:26 PM
