brake proportioning valves
dan__wright - 28/8/08 at 10:43 AM

with my sva now 6 days away i suppose i better sort out my brake balance!

im stuck between two, the dial ones and the lever ones.

the dial one will give me more adjustment but that means more fiddling to get it right.

its between these:

and

which one would you go for?
on the scren one do you drill through the part the thread goes into and through the threaded section to stop it turning?

also, would sva let me set brake bias there or do i need to sort it before?

whichever you use it needs to be locked off so it cant be changed afterwards - usually meaning lockwiring or a roll pin. What is your brake setup front and rear?? Chances are if you have drums on the rear you wont need a proportioning valve at all.

sierra discs front and rear.

ive just read a load of posts and there is a mixed opinion if they are needed.

I haven't got any proportioning valve on mine, sierra discs front and rear. Grooved and drilled at the front with green stuff pads. Went through SVA ok and never had cause to want to adjust it on the road. If I were going for one I'd get the knob one though and add it to the post SVA to do list if possible.....Oli.

Your car should be light at the front therefore fronts should lock first without a valve.

If you really want a valve fit a Fiat Uno or Fiat Strada/Ritmo/ Lada one --- much cheaper and more reliable but it will need a bracket and adjuster fabricating to make it adjustable.
Fiat valves are available from Brakes International for about 15 pounds.

Other alternatives are the non-adjustable valves fitted to Mk1 Mondeos and some other Fords.

I used the Willwood knob type on mine as my rear locked up first. I drilled the knob and made a bracket so that a roll pin would lock it off.

That said I've got Cosworth solid rear disks and standard vented on the front.

Cheers

Hi Ian
Is it possible to post a couple of pics of the roll pin locked off adjuster? I have just failed my SVA today on it (and other things) and have the same wilwood valve. I am fuming too cus took it back for the re-test and the anal git thrust a heap of new stuff that the original tester didnt. grrr
