bonding to fibreglass
wheelsinsteadofhooves - 3/6/05 at 04:30 PM

hi- im looking to mount a couple of heater/demister units under the scuttle. ive cut the slots and now want to bond the units to the underside of said scuttle. whats the best adhesive to use?
the units are black plastic (moulded abs i believe) and the underside of the scuttle is non-gelcoat rought fibregass. hence id like something that not only sticks but also does a bit of filling to get a good grip on the grp.
ive heard about "gripfill" but is it too diy based? any other cheap and easy solutions out there?
cheers,
zane

Halfrauds DIY glass fibre kit! Nothing sticks to GRP like GRP!! And it'll fill well too.

glass is good but check it against the plastic of the heater first......glass can get hot if you put too much squirt in it.......makes for good smoke bombs when you are bored...

Second vote for PU - make sure it's clean, and grease-free it wont budge!

Worked with the stuff for years, i've always used a resin based substance called bonding paste, most GRP workshops and suppliers will use it. Its thick so will fill gaps and because its polyester resin based just like your scuttle it will stick like sh1t to a shoe!!!! Just make sure you rough up your abs plastic first so the paste has something to key to. Cheers.

cool, looks like pu it is, will try to get my hands on some before the weekend.
frankly though, this is all a bit ridiculous having to have a heater/demister for the screen thats easily within reaching distance for a good wipe should things get steamy. still, got to keep the sva chappy happy.
as for neon jets... er, no.
