Has anyone tried to or made a bonnet out of brass

If so how did it go. has anyone any thourghts on the idea

All i can say is why.

I also ask why?...but heres a few pointers if you are considering it.

Brass cracks quite easily if you bend it, so you would be best bending it hot. Brass is also quite difficult to bend, it is much harder/stiffer than aluminium.

No reason why you cant do it, but it will be a lot of effort compared to an ali bonnet.

VCCBB - Very Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, would look good with a rowing boat rear panel. .

Why? Three reasons

1/ I have got a sheet, which has just been begging, for a project for years

2/ Never seen one before (Maybe a good reason why)

3/ I thought it would look pretty all polished

I have been considering doing the alloy side pannels in copper flashing - Just dont know if a laquer coat would hold up to keep the shine. Black and copper could be quite striking.

The 'golden ford' was a one seat special based on a model T, and used brass (hence golden) body work.

Sound like 3 perfectly good reasons to me - surely this is all about doing it 'our own way'....
I'd say go for it - the best traditions of locostbuilders (and it could look damn nice too!)

brass is heavy compared with aluminuim. It also corrodes like crazy. Have you got shares in Brasso?

Spyderman - 20/4/05 at 08:26 PM

Didn't that team headed by Suggs on tv rebuild that car recently?

Yes
Its amazing what random information you can pick up off tv.

If i rememder correctly they had a lot of fun (extream sarcasum) making the brass body work, and that was with an expert heling them.
