Right, through many years of owning modified tintops Ive got used to the endless list of mods to make sure they know everything an youre actually
covered, down to non standard air filters and crap.
Just got a ringback from together and spoke to a very polite gentleman who merely asked me what make and capacity the engine was, and what the car
was. I said it was a locost chassis but on irs and a cifferent engine and front uprights and things and he said that was fine, never asked about
wheels, exhaust, brakes, suspension, bushes, seats etc etc.
Is this normal? How on earth do they evaluate the risk, or is a kit car justa kit car?
Cheers
yeah quite normal, I never got asked anything like I do with normal cars. Never even had to send in a picture & kit cars tend to be vastly cheaper
to insure than a production car of the same performance. All I usually got asked was the make and size of engine, that was pretty much it.

So what happens when you come to claim and they find out you were running a 900bhp v8 on 13x5 wheels, 175 tyres and 200mm drums?
and how do they decide whether to charge more for a hayabusa car than a crossflow?
Seems weird!
As long as the details you gave them are correct it's their tough. If they don't ask about modifications then you don't tell

I suppose if they say it doesn't matter then fine. But I'm good at playing dumb and if they don't ask how do I know to tell? Mine's got the tax disc in the top corner instead of the bottom is that relevant? (Continue to throw tiny little details at them until they give up)
I guess, just the point is, you wont know till you have to claim, and then youll have a hard tim explaining why you dont have "turbocharged" or "rollcage" on your policy. At the point its down the the underwriters and the broker can largely wash their hands
Yeah there is a difference when it's a vehicle you've built yourself, but when they ask "Is there any modifications or aftermarket equipment fitted to your car" I always answer "Not that I know of" when I do know
There is no such thing as a standard kit car so how do you determine what are mods?
you wouldnt, but Id expect them to want to now some details. The guy took the capacity, didnt seem to care about the turbo...
never asked about brake sizes, specs, suspension, anything!
He got its sort of like a locost and has a 2.3 engine!
Could have bumped it to a 2.4, twin Kawasaki engines
what?
For my Mac#1 i have only ever been asked the basic spec.
For the Mk1 Golf GT1 i restored a few years back it was insured on the basis that it was under 150bhp, but the insurance company did ask for a sheet
listing the mods. The mods didnt change the quote as such as it was a generic modified car policy, but i did have to send it in in case i ever had a
claim.
I found it strange that kit car ins didnt ask for a list at first, but now take it as normal. They seem to be more interested in what the total value
would be, so id guess this would form part of the claims procedure. A bit like house buildings insurance, you are insured for a rebuilding cost but
never have to detail the exact spec or fittings in the house.
