hi all, just got back from tesco's drove the land barge down there (2000 mondeo, 1.8, bought it for £600 3 weeks ago.)

someone has reversed into the nearside wing and bumper, dent is a fair size in the wing, say 300x300mm, one big scratch, down to the metal of the wing, and paint scuffs on the bumper and wing

nice lady left contact details on my windscreen, stating she had company insurance, im goin to call her in a bit, but what would you do? im just a bit fearfull of tany garage writing it off as although it is as interesting as a ploughed field its got nothing wrong with it and ive grown quite fond of it.
im guessing if she has company insurance she will have a nice car and be making a claim herself??

It is your car.... therefore it is your decision as to wether it is written off or not.. it is NOT the choice of the insurance company!

Her insurance has to return you to the position before the accident either by writing off the car and giving you its value so you can replace it... Or by paying to fix the car... as you dont want them to write it off... they will have to repair... Assuming the cost of repair is not massive....which it could be depending on who does the repair!

Your biggest problem is finding a shed at 600 quid as the scrappage scheme has really skewed the market price of cheeeepy runarounds....
or they could pay you out and buy the shed back for a small amount of money.....

Sorry, rightly or wrongly, as soon as a claim is made and an assessor has viewed, the car can be declared a total loss irrespective of your preferences. What they cannot do is force you to give it up for salvage. If the car is still safe and roadworthy, they cannot make you stop driving it either.

On the up side, you would get a payout far higher than you could ever sell the car for - they have to give Glass's Guide retail value unless there are significant bodywork or mechanical reasons for devaluing the car.

If you post up some pictures of the damage, I could value the repair to give you some idea - its what I do for a day job.

That's a repair to the bumper, a new wing and a blend to the door, I would say about 14 hours, and £185 paint and materials, new parts are the wing, wing badge (1.8?), door mould, possibility of a headlamp (mounting brackets are very brittle), lets say £120 for parts.
Labour £420
P&M £ 185
Parts £120

Total £725+vat which would make a cat D if Glass's value is higher.

I would ask the assessor for a cash in lieu payment of £700, saying that if you receive the payment in 7 days you will not engage the services of a credit hire company.

That should do the trick.

Can you get money from insurance company to fix it yourself? Just curious really...

Could either pop it out or get a wing from a scrappers... only bugger is going to be that metalic paint!

Mark Allanson advice should do the trick. Afterall her insurance won't want a long argument with you asking for more and more and failing to settle.
Prob best to get the assesors name/no and talk to him direct.
