Just been messing about on those comparison sites, seeing how much they'd be fleecing stepson should he want to drive a car. It went up over
£2500 to put him on as a learner! How can they justify this, an increase of the value of the car to have him sat there under the watchful eye of two
adults?
Do they really expect us to be honest when he's getting quotes of £3800 on a £800 Pug 106? Sorry do these companies automatically see me being
honest and think "let's see what we can get away with"? No wonder everyone has mother as the main driver.

If there's any tips anyone has to get those quotes down to normal levels then I'd like to know please
I have had 3 sons go through this nightmare
- no1 (he is 29 now) had a 1.0 polo and when he was 17 his insurance was £750 TPFT. This would be 1998.
- no2 (now 27) had a 1.0 metro - at 17 they were asking £1500 so his mum insured the car for any driver - and this went on for 2 years - it was a
mistake not to name him on the policy, though because when he got his own insurance at 21 - (£1800 primera GT !!) he could have had the two
years' NCB discount carried over!
- No3 (now 23) went to college and didn't have his own car till he was 21 - it was still £950 TPFT though!
One more point - don't assume because you have used a price comparison sit you have the lowest quote - quite a few big insurers don't play -
direct line for one - like insuring a kit car, there are bound to be firms out there who will specialise in young drivers - to find kit car insurance,
you look in the kit car mags - try mags like Max Power etc maybe?
And the best of british!

Oh no I was using them for a rough guide, I imagine that any insurer wouldn't go much lower than that.
My first one was £850 TPFT, in 1998 on a 1.3 Escort.
As a very recent example - self and missus both 52 (terrible risk age, I know) to drive Daihatsu Sirion 1.3 - full bonus - on confused.com the
cheapest from 50+ of the biggest insurers was 210 but on Saga's website (who don't play with confused) it was 160 fully comp and Both of us
are permitted to drive other cars, too!
Shop around! Google is your friend.

The reason it goes above the value of the car is because insurance, especially with knock for knock, is based mainly on the risk to 3rd parties.
It's as easy to to plant the £800 Pug in the side of a brand new Merc as another rusty Pug.
Prices do seem to have become insane for new/young drivers though.
insurance on my mini (if i were to insure myself now) is £4500, 3rd party... im 17 and it would be parked on a driveway...
im on my mums policy on the family corsa and its £1200 a year fully comp...
also, you can get daytime insurance, where you are only insured for daytime driving, this can save you up to 45% according to which magazine, but this
is useless for me as my work finishes at 10....
good luck
Hehe missus looked at one of these "for new drivers" companies, 2 grand MORE!
Well we'll have to look around more when the time comes
Try admiral/elephant as well as the AA, in my second year, i'm paying £430 third party as a named driver on a 1.7.
Yes it was a bargain but if you keep on confused.com and the likes, they do pop up and you'll find yourself a deal.
