Lay up ( over winter ) insurence ?
dhutch - 7/9/10 at 04:02 PM

Considering taking the car off the road four 6 months over winter, sorning it, and keeping it in its box trailer out of the way on stands.

Anyone suggest any companys that can offer fire/theft insurence only?

I might get a months short term cover before this also. Any thoughts on that?

I've been using Footman James for a laid up policy during my build. This is for Fire and Theft, with Accidental Damage. If I remember it was £55 for 12 months.

Ok, thats good info.

Just tossing up the pro's and con's.

The tax runs out in 7 weeks and was £190 last time
The insurance ran out on saturday and is expected to be around £550ish (£600 tops)

So thats £740 for the year, half is £370.

Hence i 6months layup is around £70 i save £300 this winter if i dont drive it again till march.

Although if in march i then buy a years insurance, i cant do that again next winter. 6month insurance might solve this but may not be so economical?

Last year i took 6months for me to get around to fitting the tax disk which hurt quite a lot as a student, as although i did drive the car in the time, it was only very occasional short local runs so i ended up just taking the tax in my pocket as the disk holders such a pain.

Ive just start work a week ago first pay cheque due at the start of next month, which is good as currently i have basically no money. Although i could borrow £500 for a few weeks to pay the insurance easy.

I have also considered taking the 1900 cvh out to put a 2l zetec in over winter, although this is less on the cards as it was 6 months ago because the narrowboat has just developed a need for the boiler and steam plant to come out over winter.
