Just been sorting out this years insurance. A little bit of haggling going on and as I had 2 years of claim free driving with them as a named driver
they gave me another 2 years NCB for nothing!
Premium with Admiral (2001 Discovery TD5, 20yo clean license, reasonable area etc) £731. Next lowest quote, £1842.
They also matched or beat the cheapest quotes (including specialists) on each of the other 3 cars including my modified MR2.
How do they do this? Or do I not want to know?
Shows how big the profit margins are for the other companies!

Son's premium is due up in January, last year Admiral was the only reasonable quote at £1600 fully comp, renewal is £800 ish , we can afford to
up the annual mleage and ad in the possibility of commuting now!
No idea how they are doing it but I'm guessing it is from extra business with multi car policies etc - they did say if we put more cars their way
the rate for son's car would decrease so there must still be a lot of slack in the system.

I just renewed with Admiral yesterday for both my Aygo and my wife's Altea. My renewal was complicated somewhat by the fact my daughter almost
destroyed the Aygo in August this year. It's a multi-car policy and I was quoted £1090 for both cars compared to £731 last year. Could have been
worse I suppose.
Anyway I decided to take my daughter off the policy as she is at university now and living away from home and that reduced it to around £450 all in.
Not as low as it would have been without the accident but I suppose we've not done too badly as the claim cost was £3976 and so far it has only
cost me £450 in excess (which might be separate to the £3976 claim cost actually) and now about £100 extra compared to the £350 it would normally cost
for both cars. I guess this is partly due to the guaranteed NCD protection I pay for. One of the cars has 13 years NCD and the other has 14 years.
It makes you think a bit about how insurance is costed out though because clearly at £100 extra per year for two cars it will take almost 40 years to
pay back the cost of the claim and in reality my premiums will be back to normal in around 3 years. I suppose the fact we have only had 3 claims in
over 14 years (none with me as driver I might add...) whilst paying some pretty large premiums is the answer. We had two claims of £800 when my wife
collided with stationary objects twice within a year in my Alhambra. Now this claim. That's £5600 of claim costs with my average premiums for
both cars being something like £700 over those 14 years. So that's £9800 into the pot and just £5600 out of the pot. I guess that's why
I'm still a low risk compared to the average. It also helps to explain why insurance premiums have gone sky high in recent years with the
prevalence of "injury" claims. Fortunately none of my claims involved any injuries either real or imaginary.
Anyway, Admiral are really competitive especially if you include the likes of Bell Insurance and Elephant who are part of the same group. They also
have 0800 UK call centre staff and even better Canadian's from Nova Scotia with lovely accents - the girls I mean...
