Finished my Haynes Roadster and passed the IVA test - Yahey! Now getting it registered but need insurance first. Any advice which is the best company
to approach to insure me (old an excellent driving record) and my 21 year old son (young and poor driving record). I have tried a quote site and the
first company that replied would not insure anyone under 25 on the car.
Grateful for advice from those with experience.

I used Frank Pickles. Usually about £115 on a limited miles policy.
No point using a quote site at all. Go direct to specialist and kit car insurance companies and call them up. When I built mine, I was 20/21 and
insurance was tough. Its that 1st year that's the issue. I went with Crossby insurance who quoted me £460ish for 9k miles. Bloody good effort
that! I was expecting over a grand!
This year with an additional claim (parked car, unknown hit and run driver) Adrian flux understood the scenario and still quoted me £362.50 for 1.5k
miles. Not bad at 23 and living in Coventry!
The other option if insurance is struggling to let him have a go is track days. Safer environment to drive it and you don't need specific
insurance to drive it (although track day insurance will probably get advised anyway - that just covers your car regardless of fault)
Others to name, A-Plan are named a lot and also Brentacre (currently with them for my Alfa 159 but they do kits as well).
I think the main thing to realise it whilst your quote will probably be sub £200, your lad's will be higher. I looked at getting my Dad insured
but in the end it was essentially just taking another policy out on it and no discount like standard car policies. Just got to make a few calls and
see what comes back.

Can't recall the specific insurer, but from memory I paid approx. £140 a year fully comp for 3k miles on my 2.0 Pinto MK Indy a few years ago. Late 30s with good no claims and record. Not sure how a 21 yr old would fair, but it seemed a fair price to me - car tax seemed a lot for such low miles, hence I'd rather see it put on fuel in a pay as you drive type approach.
