Garage lights
ChrisW - 11/11/10 at 05:43 PM

Now the temperature has dropped the strip lights in my garage take ages to come on. They flash and hum for a bit, then one by one they light up.

I'm guessing I either need to change the bulbs or the starters. Which one?? or both?

For the cost of them at a trade place like CEF worth doing both imo

Cheers

I'd replace the starters first. B&Q were recently selling bags of starters for just £1. (about six in a bag IIRC)......

I got some - they're still in the bag in the bathroom. I should take them into the garage and try them as i've got the same 'problem'.

You may find things much better if you replace the starters with the more expensive electronic versions. They tend to start much quicker and with far less flickering.

will be the damp. just put a little bit of tape over the top of the starter. should help.

Or just give the tube a slight flick with your finger. Gently, like - not so hard that you need to sweep the glass up!

Something like that. The tubes in my Dad's cellar workroom used to flicker when the starters were cold / damp. Seem to remember flicking one just a bit too hard once, when I was a kid. IIRC, they go with a satisfying pop...
