play in quick rack
hi all,
I have a tiger avon which I finished about
a year ago (do you ever actually finish!!?)
I bought a 'new' quick rack from tiger and there is a slight amount of play in the steering- really annoying.
I think its an escort rack? anyone know if any adjustment is possible to get rid of it or is it a new rack??
Thanks in advance

You could try tightening the bolts on the plastic drum cover, think its called a clutch but to the side of the column stub there may be an oval cover.
Basically underneath this is a spring that presses against a plastic drum and in turn presses against the steering rack. Maybe tighten the bolts up or
else take the cover off and change the gasket to a thinner one.
I know on my standard rack, mine was too tight so I cleaned it all out and replaced this gasket with a slightly thicker piece of cardboard and it
works great now.

Before trying to adjust the rack damper ---
First thing to do is check the steering column UJ pinch bolts for tightness not unknown for them to be supplied with shouldered bolts that don't
have enough length of thread and the nut becomes thread bound.
Also the nut that hold the steering wheel on is tight and the wheel has no movement on the splines.
If you do adjust the rack damper remember and check the the rack moves freely when at full lock in both directions --- because racks wear most
around the straight ahead poistion.

thanks for the replies guys,
I have double checked all the other possibilities yesterday- its definately the rack- interestingly the wheels do appear to steer in the area of
'play'- but there is a much less resistance on the steering wheel, then as you turn the steering wheel further the resistance you would
expect starts- any further on how i adjust the rack? Im a bit reluctant to mess it up!!

Sounds like the damper is already turned up too tight.

thats interesting-
I remember tightening the steering rack clamps pretty tight, it was early in the build and I think i wanted it really solid,
is it possible it could be too tight- causing some resistance?
