Best way to insure daily and weekend cars
In a bit of a predicament. Insurance broker (A Plan) rang today to tell me that Groupama have discontinued the insurance policy I have and that
they're not going to be able to renew it when it expires *tomorrow*
I've got two cars; an Audi A6 which is completely standard but, despite being diesel, is considered to be quite high performance. It's
also quite expensive - I saw one on the local Audi forecourt last week, same spec as mine but nowhere near as many options, for £27.5k.
Then I have an MR2 as a weekend toy which has been modified to within an inch of it's life. Engine conversion, tubular exchausts, flowed head,
big brakes, coilover suspension, etc
The difficult bit is that if you ring what I'd call a mainstream insurer, they understand the Audi and provide a good quote on it. But as soon
as I mention the MR2 they don't want to know.
However, if you call a specialist insurer (I'm thinking Adrian Flux, HIC, etc) they understand the MR2, understand the mods, give a good quote,
but their pricing on the Audi is astronomical.
Ok, so I could go for seperate companies for the two cars, but then what do I do about NCB? When I got the Audi I moved 8 years NCB off the MR2 onto
it, and then insured the MR2 as a second car. If I split it, I'll have to insure one of them with 1 year NCB, which will jack up the price no
end. I seem to remember either HIC or Flux refusing to insure the MR2 last year unless I had some no claims to use on it.
Just wondered what the general consensus was. Am I best finding a company that understands both cars (any recommendations?) or splitting the policy
between two different insurance companies?
Any other advice? Surely I can't be the only one with this problem!!

Yep.
The insurers scam of only being able to apply existing no claims to one insurance polcy is at best naughty at worst extorsion
Worth trying the likes of Admiral with their multi car policys?

Tried Admiral this evening (as call centres are open until 10pm). Usual story - they're happy with the Audi, but won't touch the MR2.
And yes, NCB should be NCB, regardless of how many cars you have!

Try a classic policy on the MR2 (I assume its over 10 yrs old?) They insure any car on classic policy and doesnt need (or earn) its own NCB, but they
will give equiv of your NCB when discounting it.
I had an agreed value on my track nova (£2k), all mods declared (engine change, alloys, brakes, suspension), limited mileage of 3k - for £350 a year
(and I had lots of points too!)
It was through perfomance direct and before that with footman james, at a similar price.

Have a word with Swinton Insurance for the MR2 - when I got my modified Soarer (Lexus import) insured, I seem to remember they gave me 5 years NCB as
a discount. Other companies were quoting over twice their quote and I got fully comp for just £250 AND £75 cashback the following year!
Cheers,

Give David Auden a ring - http://www.rallycar-insurance.co.uk/
They tend to do everything and understand modified cars!

As above, I have had some very good competition policies with David Auden although they do sometimes expect you to actually compete. Another I have
had severely modded cars with on "classic" insurance is HIC. You may find as mentioned above that you can insure the Audi using your no
claims and then sort the MR2 as a classic!
EDIT
Admiral Multicar were charging my mate nearly £200 more for two Pug 306's (diesel ones at that) than they paid next year on separate policies.
It seems you pay heavily for the convenience of one direct debit!

I second David Auden -
Easy as an old shoe to deal with, very friendly and competitive pricing.

Thanks for the advice on this guys.
In the end, I insured the Audi with Admiral on a 'regular' high street policy. I'm using my 8 years NCB. I could have got a bit
cheaper, but this does seem to be a decent policy - courtesy car, europe cover, third-party extension, protected NCB, etc.
Adrian Flux quoted me £242 for my MR2 with 1 year NCB, fully comp, 'like for like' on modifications, 3000 mile limit. I've not
taken it up yet though, and I think I'll wait until the Spring before I do it, at which point I'll try this David Auden chap too. Going
to make a concerted effort to get my XR2 finished instead of messing with the MR2!
