turbocharging a BEC???
I was wondering about turbocharging an r1 bec, and i was thinking about taking a charger out of a 1.0td car, such as diahatsu charade. would this be
feasable, and if so would it be relatively straightforward. i know that turbos run off exhaust gasses, and would that mean redirecting from the
manifold, as i want to keep the exhaust tubes protuding from the car as mormal, as i really like the look they give all in a line coming out the side.
any ideas from blower specialists would be welcome

Well if you insist on keeping the pipes then you'd have to put the turbo after they join into one pipe, which means sticking it down the side of
the car, you'd then have to run a pipe back to the inlet side .......... this would give you HUGE amounts of lag, actually, no i'm wrong,
i mean hHh uUu gGg eEe amounts of lag.
Oh, and you'll need an oil feed to the turbo as well, if you're doing it properly an intercooler on the pipe between the turbo and the
inlet manifold.......
Also, a 1litre diesel engine turbo will be designed for that application, if you've got a 1 litre petrol running at twice / three times the RPM,
you'll get that much more exhaust gasses, will it still work? will it still be efficient?
(i'm no expert, before someone points out where i'm wrong - but if you want to turbo, you want to get a turbo matched to the job
you're doing and a custom exhaust and inlet + associated bits)

urgh NO TURBOCHARGING, go with a supercharger less complicated and NO LAG!
I love Pinto's, even if i did get mine from P&O!

You only get (bad) lag if you've got a compromised setup. This conversation is currently being had on the sevens list.
The description of the well setup turbo car is like driving a nasp with a peaky cam.

Ive been in a friend's busa turbo and there's certainly no lag if you keep the boost sensible. His is currently running about 250bhp and
its awesome, just feels like a big capacity normally aspirated engine with gobfuls of power everywhere.
Its not a cheap thing to do though, to do it even half properly you're looking at a £3-4k investment.

turbo
size your turbo based upon a normal car 2l (you are revving about twice as much) . I have been researching this for some time. A wrx td04l is about
right, maybe something a little smaller for an 02-03 motor.
Nevermind the naysayers, you might experience some lag below 5k or so, but if you are driving an r1 BEC below that rev then give the thing to your
grandma.
Mount the turbo outside of the car and throw a big filter on front, sounds pretty sweet.

and for a bike engine Garage19 recommended an early Fiat Uno or Diahatsu Charade turdo.
In the end that car we were hoping to modify got sold so we never got a chance to impliment the plan, but it might make a project over a winter some
time for my own car.

cheers for those replies, it looks like i can either have a turbo, or a nice looking exhaust, so i was thinking about supercharging. what cars have
superchargers on them, that i could possibly salvage from a scrapyard??i cannot think of any apart from extremely high performance cars, which
certainly wont be locost, cheers

You would then need to extend the crank and add a pully to drive the supercharger iirc.

i did some compressor maps a while back and came up with a gt28-60 as a decent balance itll be boosting by 5krpm and be giving full boost by 6krpm.
should end up with around 250-300bhp without running the charger into the inefficient speeds.
i seriously considered one but with the boost dropping off after 8.5k to give mid range torque without giving uncontrollable peak power.

Im currently turboing my blackbird, dont even think about just bolting on a turbo to a stock engine, youll need about 5-6 k min, this will give you
about 320bhp at wheels on a modified mitsubishi turbo, holeshot are doing mine at the mo.

I just realized that supercharger from TTS is probably a centrifugal type. In other words, a turbo driven by a belt. If so I don't see the
advantage of it over a traditional exhaust-driven turbo. Either way, *if* it's not positive displacement, it won't help low-end rpm.

The only time you will get turbo lag is when you first pull away, once your on the move and banging through the box there will be no lag.
You need lag in first to catch grip.
