A few questions about BEC
jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 11:06 AM

After some consideration i think im going to want to eventually build a BEC rather than use a more subtle x-flow engine!

I have a couple of questions about the build!

1. How do you deliver the power to the rear wheels through the bike gear box?

2. What is the legal requirements about a reverse and what are the options to fit one?

3. When it comes to the exhaust system's are there off the shelf exhaust's so to speak or do they all need to be specially made?

4. This is going to be my first build, will i be taking on to much building a BEC befor iv built a car engined car?

5. Also i seem to see alot of the BEC cars being the MK indy, what are the bike engines like when it comes to fitting in this kit?

Nooooooooooooooo!

jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 11:17 AM

why noooooooooo

1 Yes, bike gearbox. Fit a prop shaft adapter instead of the chain sprocket and you're away.

2 Yes, you have to have one. Either a reverse box in between 2 short prop shafts (MNR or quaife) or some sort of electrical contraption.

3 Yes, plenty of kit car people have off the shelf exhausts for their cars for common engines.

4 No. BEC is no harder than CEC

5 Many kits take bike engines, not just MK. MNR make special bike engined chassies with a narrower tunnel and wider foot wells because the bike engine doesn't need the space.

jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 11:21 AM

thank's for the help, is the mnr reverse box only compatible with the mnr kit?

Dangle_kt - 24/7/09 at 11:24 AM

The engine is mounted side on, and then a sprocket adapter fitted that is bolted to a prop, then the prop to the diff and then onto the rear wheels. That is on a front mounted engine, mid mounted can use chains and have the engine oriented normally.

Mnr make a reverse box, quaife make one and then there is electic ones using starter motor.

Exhausts can be off the shelf but only if you use a common engine if you use a v twin. Or G4 then you will need to look at custom exhausts.

If cars were meant to be powered by bike engines, that is how they would have been made in the first place

Get used to this sort of comment, the cec boys find it easier to bash becs than actually use any sort of reason for going for their engine choice

r1_pete - 24/7/09 at 11:43 AM

Noooooooooooooooo not the BEC / CEC debate again.....

I wonder if Morgan had this debate with Ford when they built the early three wheelers??

No, it could be used by anyone. It is cheaper than the quaife box and they claim it is better.

richardh - 24/7/09 at 11:58 AM

mnr reverse has same stud pattern and will bolt in exactly same as quaife

mnr is quieter, smoother and less expensive.

think its actually lighter slightly too

do a ring around of the kits you are looking at.

mk / mnr / mac1 all do BEC's

jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 12:00 PM

thanks for the replies, iv just been looking at the R1 engine or equivelent! where can i source the adaptor plates and props from? is this something i could get through MK and MNR! which one of the kit as a standered are lighter with the Bike engines and which tend to be the better handling on track?

richardh - 24/7/09 at 12:04 PM

mnr will supply it
i expect mk and mac would do too

i think all 3 are about the same weight - depends on whaether you need a full frame.

mine is 472kg with quaife and 3/4 full fuel and seat runners and padded seats.

i could save weight too if needed.

others will all be sub 500kg i would think with bec's

r1's are common and cheap now.

zx12 seems to be gaining but is expensive but has more power

busa's common too but expensive if go wrong

just stuff i've heard or read on here mind

Dangle_kt - 24/7/09 at 12:10 PM

There will be great handling mnrs, and mm and every other kit, there will also be pigs. It's not so much the brand as the setup and spec. And it's not to say that becs are better oN track, there are some fast and some slow. Becs tend to be lighter weight and have a more focused approach, which almost makes them quicker round a track by defalt, no reason a cec couldn't be as quick or quicker with the right setup.

richardh - 24/7/09 at 12:14 PM

agreed
setup is the key
a good suspension setup, right tyre size and tyre inflation are more key to getting round a track than just pure power / weight

then there's the drivers ability on road and track

I'm a track day chicken as i just don't have that level of confidence any more. Plus its a lot of wonga to fix if i bash it on road or track

jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 12:53 PM

This is really starting to give me a headache, im looking on the mac#1, MNR and MK sites and im trying to work out which one is best value for money! If i were to go with one of these companies and asked for all the bits to creat a BEC apart from the bits i would need from a donor car which one is the better company to go with?

The mnr vortex inboard looks like it comes with all the nuts and bolts required to fit various components do the other 2 not come with this?

richardh - 24/7/09 at 01:06 PM

i think you may go round in circles here

each has good and bad points but here's a bit more.

think about

looks of the car
chassis design
suspension components
upgrade options or replacements
intended use
which engine you might want - mnr have mounts and mount frames to suit most. mk and mac may too but worth a check
locality to supplier maybe??
how you feel about the supplier - confident, quirky

you are looking at about £10k give or take so its not so much about the cars themselves but for me it was about which i gelled with when ordering etc

go have a look at the factories, ring them and ask loads of questions.

get out for a ride in each - maybe with different engines in to make it tougher

happy decisions

spdpug98 - 24/7/09 at 01:11 PM

I have sent you a u2u

jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 01:24 PM

Thanks for the U2U!

How did people find fitting a bike engine into the Indy! Since iv been looking this is the one that has stood out to me?

jimgiblett - 24/7/09 at 01:27 PM

Have the manufacturer fairly close can be helpful.

I chose a BEC as it appeared simpler than a CEC. Just one unit engine and gearbox. Could buy a new (newish motor) with everything to make it go for £1000-1800.

IVA requires a reverse I passed my SVA without and only on the odd occasion do I miss it.

You will need to decide how track focused you want to be as this will impact on what compromises you will make to be lightest and quickest. If you make the car very track focused you may not use it much on the road.

I swapped from an aeroscreened Phoenix to a windscreened Fury so that I could use the car more including touring (just done my second European Alps tour).

I enjoyed the challenges of the build but I built mine to drive. Supercar performance for hatchback running costs.

jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 01:32 PM

the big problem is MK and mnr are around 3 hours away from me so not exactly around the corner

richardh - 24/7/09 at 01:54 PM

pick a day and go up and view both.

i did and had further to travel.
definately worth it.

I miss having a windscreen as i would likely use it more.

my next one if i get time / money and a job might be another mnr but the mx5 version

or the other one was something like the fury for the same reasons as Jim

jamesbaa - 24/7/09 at 02:03 PM

yeah im planning on going up there soon, but there not close if things go wrong or i need bits lol!

richardh - 24/7/09 at 03:09 PM

same problem here with parts and distance but we overcame that.

Had new uprights, wings etc all through the post / courier ok

also bgh geartech in kent have an open day coming up on the 23 august - they are fisher fury agents and might beworth a wander to see engine and chassis ideas for comparison.

Hellfire - 24/7/09 at 03:22 PM

BEC is definitely the way to go. If we were to build again, it would probably be an Indy Spec R, not that theres anything wrong with the MNR. The MNR is nice but I personally prefer the shape and lines of the Indy.

Or come down to the Plough in Bletchingly 1st Friday of the month as there are usually a few bike engined kits Furies, R1ot, Phoenix, MK. You can blag a ride out to compare.

Or you might get lucky and see some BEC's at Newlands Corner Guildford this sunday morning

Newlands corner link

GU4 8SE

Keep a lookout in clubs and events.

How often is there a meet at Newlands then?

Most dry sunday mornings unless we are at another show, probably always someone there anyway on a sunday if not the usual crowd.
