I tried to start the Jag this evening, as its sorn at the moment we've been starting it up every other week so it doesn't seize.
When I turned the key all the lights on the dash started flashing but nothing else happened and I couln't disengage the lock on the gear change
so it won't come out of park. I thought I'd leave it for a bit but it wouldn't lock so I tried to jump start the car and had the same
problem with starting it and with the lock on the transmission but was able to use my cars battery to lock the jag.
Its a 97 x300 model XJ6 4.0l, any ideas?
On a side note my jump lead sparked when I attached it to my car and I've not seen that before, but it did have a bit of snow on it, is that
anything to worry about?

Sounds like the battery has gone flat, and was drawing too much current from whatever you tried to jump it from to start it.
Give the battery a full charge before delving any further.
Thanks for the quick reply. Battery was obviously my first thought, its the not jumping that though me but what you say would make sense, whats the
best way to charge the battery?
I'm gonna leave it now till my dads about, and probably wait till the snow is gone.

If you need to get it out of park, the little star thing on the j gate unscrews (tool is in the boot i think with the spare). There is a button or
something in there that will put the car into neutral.
You should connect the negative lead last and disconnect it forst to help prevent sparks.
The battery problem either due to a dead cell or parasitic current drain, all cars with ecu have a small constant current drain on the battery.
Also battery performance drops by 20% at 0c and 50% at -20c

When you start a jag you need to let it run for a minimum of 30 mins at the starter takes so much out of the battery when cranking. Mine did the same a couple of years ago.
Hopefully it will al be made legal again by the end of next month so we can start using it again. Thanks for all the advice.
I wouldn't charge it indoors, batteries give off gases when charging!!!
deffo battery, give it a good overnight charge, out of the car, somewhere warm ish that is well ventilated.
when the car starts, let it run on tick over for ages (if you were driving it on the road, 30-40 mins would do but when ticking over you could do with
a few hours. obviously if doing it in a garage, leave the door open so as not to gas yourself
Another vote for charging it indoors on a good charger or at worst Jumping it off for a long time.
Our works vans have Trackers on them, a pretty low drain but for quite a long time.. after 10 days mine was completely flat.
Being a Diesel it takes a good 10 mins or more jumping off something with the rev's raised on the donor before it will even turnover at any
significant speed the batterys that dead!.
Charging indoors is fine re battery gassing so long as it's not in a sealed cupboard, the battery might gases if you leave it on charge to long
(i.e. voltage 14.7V or more (approx) when on charge)..
