best lights for foggy condition?

what are the best lights for fog, i mean halogen? HID?, i have 4300k hid and today i experienced that they have better visibility in fog, am i right on this?

In real pea soup fog powerful lights are the worst thing you can use.

in thick fog, drop right down to sidelights.

there's more than enough ambient light to see what's what and it stops the fog reflecting it all straight back at you.

can't imagine HID vs halogen would make much difference unless it's down to the reduced scatter of the projector but that's not anything to do with the HID, just the lens.

The reason fog lights are low down in the front valance, is to project the light under the fog, so that the reflection back at you isnt directly in front causing a white reflection. These are normally more powerful (focused) than main beam (not high beam).

Fog lights pick out kerbs and verges which is good in "real pea soupers"

Great idea then nobody can see you coming and your then not going to need to see where your going any more.

You have to have dipped beam on to enable the fog lamps on most modern cars anyway.

Rich is spot on. Fogs are mounted very low to shine under the fog and reflect back off the surroundings through the fog. Use them with either dipped or side lights but experiment to see which is less dazzling. Don't use main as this will dazzle you completely (and is why cars are wired to switch off fogs with main beam). Rear fog is essential in thick fog, regardless of whether you are last car, to avoid being rear ended, but should never be used in rain as some idiots do, dazzling the drivers behind.

Most on here have never driven in the really thick fogs we used to get or worse smogs that were common decades.
When it gets really bad a good trick is to flick all your lights off for a second or two you will be amazed how much more you can see --- then quickly switch them back on to let others see you.
