transporting car from Aberdeenshire to Dorset
Slater - 12/1/10 at 02:28 PM

Hello, I may need to get my kit car from Aberdeenshire to Dorset (600 miles) for long term storage at my parents house. I'd prefer to drive it down myself in the summer, or even hire a trailor and tow it. However, I might not have the time to do this myself.

Can you recommend any transport companies that would give me a quote for moving my car down South???

Keith

there a few on ebay that advertise plus I could find details of recovery company that took me home.

I suspect the minimum you could hope for is 50p per mile, more likley to be £ 1 so not matter what, you a looking at a few hundred quid.

pick a nice weekend and drive it yourself then train it back. or wait for Mr Whippy to have holdiay down south west way.

starting to think i should buy a beavertail recovery truck again now

but until then, shipley

Try either ARL Logistics (Ellon Based) or Falkirk Car Carriers

Expect to pay around £300.

Thanks Scootz. I got a quote from ARL Logistics - £350 +VAT, might be my cheapest and least hassle option. I'd prefer to drive it though.

I looked into exporting it to South Africa but i'd have to pay 36% of the value plus 14% VAT, so not worth doing.

I'd hate to sell it after so much effort building the thing, I plan to be away for approx 2 years so maybe my Dad can look after it in Dorset and keep it ticking over and safe. He restored a 67 MGB roadster 10 years ago and uses it as his daily driver so he knows a bit about cars.

"keep it ticking over and safe" - you're being hopeful aren't you?
Once he's got his hands on it there'll be no stopping him and I suspect the B will come second best.
It'll be scary rides for all the mates and trips here there and everywhere. There are some really nice roads down his way.
You have been warned.
BTW can you not ask him to contribute to the transport costs as he'll be benefitting as well?
Cheers, Pewe

It'd be terrible to break down on the way wouldn't it...
I would have never done that to get an untaxed scrapper from South Yorkshire to Berkshire.

I got a quote for bringing a 7 from Peterborough to Preston for £79 inc. There are companies that will fill unused space on their transporters cheap rather than waste it. Best of all they bid against each other for the job. I just got a Zetec engine and gearbox collected from Bristol and brought to Preston for £47. You can also set the maximum you want to pay so they bid within this. Id put on £150 to £175 and see what happens. Your not obligated to accept any bid if you dont wish so can safely test the water.

Take a look at Shiply.com Linky

Come down with the convoy in your seven to stoneleigh kitcar show for the may weekend then just go down from there.....fly back to Granite city

Slater - 12/1/10 at 08:06 PM

Some good ideas there, thanks guys. The Stoneliigh trip might work.

i cant help but think that thats a bloody long way! The round trip towing would use nearly £300 of fuel. Surely you could find someone locally happy to store it safely for 2 years for less?

Shiply.com is the best bet

Can't you rent a Lockup or garage for storage in or around aberdeen rather than ship it to dorset (and then back)
