Which volvo?
speedyxjs - 20/1/10 at 01:47 PM

Long story short, my dad has always insisted we have fiesta's as first cars but my little sister cant stand them (plus she could never get all her guitar and recording equipment in mine) so she has decided she would like a nice Volvo (technically still a ford )

She is 15 atm but when i get my workshop in a few months, she would like one to work on so when she can drive, she will have a much better car than all her friends

Now, is there any volvo in particular that she could afford with a few hundreds and be relatively cheap on insurance (wasnt there one on the TG first car challenge?)

No volvo's going to be cheap to insure for a 17 year old.

... even more expensive for a 15 yr old.

Look on ebay at volvo 850, couple hundred quid for some.

Dunno much about any other models.

this one

The T5 is the (supposedly) sporty one, with 250bhp. The newer ones are very nice and shift too

How about a Volvo 340/360? I've seen them for sale for around £300-400. They're also a popular choice for tramp drifting I think :-) Might be too small though?

Firstly as ^^^, No volvo (or any car) is going to be cheap to insure.

What guitar gear does she lug about? Massive difference between a solid body and 12" combo, and an acoustic with mic's, preamp, di box, mixer, pa etc (or even worse both!)

Might just be easier to get a pod and a pa!?

Still think the insurance will be extreme for even the smallest of volvos.

Might be easier to start off with a retro Ford if she insists on being different.

This would be my choice...

Cheap to run & insure, totally whacky and excellent for someone new to car stuff wanting to learn.

T5 was 225 bhp
T5R was 250 bhp
(I think I have the numbers correct)

Are you sure a volvo meets this criteria?

My vote is for a locost with a trailer

whats 25bhp between friends

My brother has a rover 214si 1996 model as he carries a load of guitars etc in his boot, this would probably be a better car and easier to insure too

Cheers for all the replys.

When i said cheap to insure, i meant, cheap for a new driver, i know it will be expensive (my first fiesta (1.25) was £1800 with my mum as a named driver! )

She's pretty keen on the volvo and i havn't been able to persuade her to consider anything a bit better.

She would need to carry and amp, two guitars (electric and acoustic), mic and stand and a few other bits and pieces so not too much. I dont think it would all fit in a 340 and i dont like them anyway (looks like its on trolly wheels )

Volvorsport - 20/1/10 at 06:13 PM

volvo 440

proper ones are 240/740/940

LBMEFM - 20/1/10 at 08:39 PM

V40 is an estate so plenty of room, can be picked up cheap and the 1.9 is cheap to insure and they are great inside with all the toys.

Ninehigh - 20/1/10 at 09:01 PM

Just have a look round for any old Volvo estate by the sound of it...

Volvorsport - 20/1/10 at 10:35 PM

Get a hearse, many coach builders built hearses out of volvos and you can get a giant 2 door estate.

I think thats a 740, you get 4 seats and space for a whole bands worth of equipment. If you keep the inards at the back you could store alot in the cupboard at the bottom so it was out of sight.

I looked into getting a hearse before and you find alot of decent ones for just over £1000, and you know its not going to have been pushed or poorly maintained. And think of the towing capability.

Should be ok, I used to get two 4x12s, two heads and four guitars in the back of my XR3, rear view mirror was a waste of time though.

Them stupid stickers on the lights, the rest imo is fair enough. Not amazing but I could live with it.

Would you rather it be done like the Mystery Machine?
