Anyone on here paint cars for a living?
Just wondering what a reasonable price would be to respray a mk2 MR2 in a different colour. It's black now, and I want to go a similar green to
the Focus RS.
Been quoted £2k to do it, which is about twice what I expected. Is that reasonable?
Chris
Depends on the condition of the car and the end result. For that sort of money on a good car expect all trim to be removed and a concours finish. how many hours are they quoting for? Paint with thinners/activator is around £38-£85/litre. Is it going to be baked afterwards? That costs a fortune. I would imagine around 20-25 hours labour, rest is materials etc.
are they quoting for a full job including underbonnet door shuts etc.
Make sure the door shuts are done otherwise you will regret it, theres nothing worse than seing a different colour when you open the dor or boot etc
You could try "stuleah"
If they are doing all the shuts etc that's quite a reasonable price IF it's for a good job.
The 20 - 25 hours quoted above would just about cover masking scotchbriting & painting an already virtually perfect car!!! & then it would
have to be gun finish because it certainly wouldn't cover any polishing etc.
If you're doing a colour change you MUST do all the shuts or it looks awful, but bear in mind the engine bay & inside bonnet & boot wuill
still be the wrong colour - it actually devalues the car for that reason.
Personally I would never recommend a colour change other than as a quick "lash up" job.
Basically it would alway work out far cheaper to sell the car & buy another in a colour you want - assuming of course it's available.
All IMHO of course!
i payed £2k for a different colour respray on a cavalier gsi(must of been mad) about 7 years ago.
that included quite a bit of bodywork(rear arches and sills mainly) and lots of smoothing off and colour coding the black bits. all door shuts where
done and the biggest pain was that i had to remove the engine and all other underbonnet stuff(bodyshop stripped the rest of the car down), no point in
doing half a job.
job was spot on for that price though
lot of work but worth it to get it all the same colour

Thats very nice that cav. I have a soft spot foe the gsi's.
AS for the respray my mates just paid 1100 quid to have his transit recovery sprayed in ford st asbo orange which is expensive paint. That was full
cab respray, doors shuts the lot. bumper spray and spray chassis in black with all prep included. Good job aswell.
I was quoted £900 for a locost. I suppose this might be a fair reflection on the time it takes and to a lesser degree the materials.
I think I'll go out and buy a decent s/h compressor instead and bodge it.
Doesn't Mark Allanson run / manage a bodyshop? Might be worth U2U'ing him?
On the case, It takes a day to strip out the car ready for paint, a day to fully prep and de dent/rust/chips etc, a day to mask and apply the paint
(hinged panels removed), 1/2 a day to polish and demask, and a day to put it all back together, that a minimum of 36 hours (usually takes 45, I
estimate for 50).
The paint varies from system to system, Focus RS is a 2 stage pearl, I would allow £450 for abrasives, fillers, masking, baking, primers, colour,
clearcoats, farecla, and autoglym. (2 bakes, one for primer and one for colour, at a cost of £35 each).
At £30 per hour £1500
Paint £ 450
Broken parts,trims etc £ 150
Vat £ 367
Minimum £2500 for a small car
Start adding ££ if the screens need to come out, expensive badges (you try resticking them!), self adhesive mouldings, 2 colour painting will add a
days labour. Add a day if you have rear doors and a hatch, and add a day if its something time consuming to strip like a lexus.
Thanks for the input, guys. Sounds like it'd save me a fortune if I strip the car myself and trailer it down to the paintshop. I'll stop
in and have a word with them next time I'm passing to see whether they'd do that.
Chris
i used to charge a minimum of £1500 for a respray and that was cheap 4 year ago....
on a small car like that we would charge between £1000 and £1500 depending on condition, that would include door edges and boot edges.
here is my website to give you an idea of some of the stuff we (myself and my father in law) do.
