Just a rally car question
carpmart - 28/1/10 at 05:20 PM

The 6R4 thread got me thinking, would an 80's Group B rally car be quicker than say Loeb's Citroen on the same stage?

Doubt it.

All the fancy active diff techonology they have now compared to the old fashioned ironmongery would mean that the new car puts more of the power down more of the time.
Then there's the brakes now which are much more efficient.
The sequential transmission. How much time does that save over a stage.

Still, I know which one I would prefer a go in, and it's powered by a V64V engine.

I guess one factor is how ‘period’ you go on things like shocks and tyres because massive improvements have been made in these areas. Also aren’t rally-X cars basically using the same drive-train technology as cars like the 6R4. My thoughts are that given modern tyres, shocks and set up a 6R4 type car would come tops

Didn't they do this on some "10 of the worlds best rally cars" show, it proved that todays cars absolutely slaughter group b cars, yet they still don't look as fast as they're so smooth.

I was under the impression that Group B cars are still sometimes seen in Hillclimbs, If this is true. all you need to do is find hillclimb results.

Another option would be to try and find a rally stage that is still used with out much change from 86 and compare that way.

24 years is a long time in motorsport so I reckon a new WRC car would be quicker.

Wrc cars are quicker than Grp B. BUT as stated above not as good to watch or listen to . also arguably, previous generation Grp4 are even better

WRC cars are going to be miles quicker than a GpB car. When GpB was banned in 86 we then had GpA cars. Even the first of these were breaking stage records in 87. I would guess that a WRC car is at least 5 seconds a mile quicker than the best of the GpB cars, probably more.

As said though the GpB cars were fantastic to watch. 4WD and massive horse power in what were crude chassis made the drivers job just that. A Real Job.

Shame that, as ever, the sport's governing bodies completely misunderstood the reasons behind the various GpB accidents, particularly those involving fires.....

I think your all correct and the modern WRC car will be quicker!

Shame really!
