I've got an old Rangey and looking at doing a conversion to something like the Dakar or Blitzworld "Traka". Anyone know of any others,
suggestions, etc.
I'm doing this with my nearly 4yr old as he's really into this stuff.

Either that or maybe Tomcat motorsport do something?

I like the Dakar, the company is in my local town and I often see one driving around. I saw one driving around in the snow about a month ago, looked great.
I have built a tomcat style land rover, which started life as a range rover. Chassis shortened by a foot, and then space frame round that. Engine
moved back 5in for better weight distribution. Just finished putting a 3.9 in which has given it a lot more power than the very tired 3.5 which I
started with. Build is pretty simple once the frame is on, took loads of pictures throughout the build so if you do decide to do one give me a shout
if you need any advice.

Is this purely off road or has it got to be road legal?
Cheap and long lasting solution would be to pop a Jago body on it - no rust issues and with all the power and light weight would be a flyer.
Several 4 x 4 examples exist using all sorts of runing gear - zook, Daihatsu etc.
It might need some fibre glass work and a fullcage, but you can use just part of the tub- a bloke in the Jago club has built an extremely capable off
roader using a Discovery- he builds trucks for a living so knows what makes sense.
He signs on as 3 spins- it would be worth your while speaking to him, too. Plenty of cheap Jago bodies coming through on e bay, unfortunately

My little Ukrainian tractor is worthy of consideration.
Will match a difflocked Land Rover most places, then keep going when they get stuck.
And can be fixed with a hammer and duct tape.
Not quite a Tomcat though...
there is someone with a V6 one , aswell as a lot of twincam fiats.
The Rangey chassis & lightweight body always look the biz for me ? Mate has a well sorted 3.9 shortened RR chassis with lightweight body/ragtop.

It has to be road legal, have 4 seats, retain some sort of windscreen.
I know it will need some element of chassis shortening so will then need IVA test but want to keep work to a minimum on this project.
I don't think chopping off a foot or so from end of chassis needs IVA- you are effectively re bodying an existing vehicle
chassis modification = IVA.
ALL bobtailed 4x4s should have an IVA unless of course they were pre IVA

I'm resurrecting a bit of an old off-topic discussion here (which will no doubt raise the necessary eyebrows 
), but does anybody have any
experience with the (ex-Bowler) Tomcat here?
We're looking at making a move from circuit racing to off-road racing and these things look a scream in comp safari events...
Any input would be welcome!
...and an extra question: being as it's really only the chassis you're retaining, can it legally still retain its' original registration (likely Range Rover in our case)???
