I have booked myself on a welding course at the local college, unfortunately it doesn’t start until August. I would like to buy a welder before then
and start doing some practice at home . Can anyone recommend a good welder, I will be using it for:
• General Chassis
• Roll bar
• Car bodywork
Basically general automotive. I want it to last a few years

Got my Topmig off him and its dead easy to use.
On my welding course they use Kempi & Murex but you get what you pay for & they're not cheap. Having said that, I picked up a 150A Kempi off the bay for £280. I've seen a Murex go on there for £360.

Chassis? Already welded. Roll cage? Already welded in. You just want to melt some metal don't you? Anyway, get the Clarke 151 and get it soon as
I still haven't got around to replacing my Cebora that died 18 months ago and I could do with tacking my cage before taking it to get it

2 miller
3 Migtronic
4 cebora
5 murex
6 lincon
7 Portamig
every one of the above make blooming good welders and i would rather have a 10-15 year old version of any of the above than a clarke toy welder.
sorry if that upsets anyone with a clarke. yes they are good hobby welders but not my cup of tea
also look for a welder that will take a 15kg reel as they usually have industrial wire feed motors rather than pony plastic toy motors.
i had a hobby cebora for a long time - seriously abused it by taking the cover off and putting an office fan on full power next to it.
When it broke i replaced it with a clarke 151 - very happy with the clarke.
I love my little Kemppi. It practically does the job for you. 
thanks for all the replies. Theres a few names in there that i havent even heard, worth finding out some prices. It seems that the clarke is the one most people go for.
