Moving to Jo'burg - Kit Car storage?
Slater - 15/2/10 at 02:44 PM

Following on from this post linker we went down for a visit to Johannesburg and quite like the place, my company will pay for housing in a very nice gated community, schooling and moving costs. So my family and I and will be moving to Jo'burg in June.

Question is...... what do I do with my kit car?
Importing it will be very expensive with the import tax and VAT to pay (about 50% of the value).
I'd hate to sell it, after the ammount of work I put in.
So I am looking to store it in UK for 2-3 years while I am away...... can anyone recommend a good, not very expensive place to store a car, possibly in NE Scotland?

If the taxes are 50%, how do they know the full value of the car?

It's a locost and worth only what somebody will pay after all.

I am sure you can find a friend that you can sell it to and then sell it back to you and give a receipt for 1 quid.

Local storage company? Ours were happy to quote for a half built kit. There are also lots of places that will store cars but this is probably out of you price bracket (expensive classics). Do you know a local farmer (old barn ect). You need somewhere dry and drafty (unlike my garage!)..

We let our house at the moment but have not let the garage... Maybe this is on option if you let your house out???

If it's only 2-3yrs think about letting your house, you can normally do this on the exiting mortgage.. It may-work out cheaper to do this and rent in abroad..

The 50% tax should surely be the equivalent of £125 then. Just take a copy of Ron's book with you to prove it!

I would seriously think of selling it and buying one in SA as climate is ideal for 7's and there is a strong community in Gauteng with lot's of track action, then sell that when you leave - as who knows - with your parents maybe in Ausie that may be your next move and do you really want the issues and costs you will have with your car stored for 2 or more years?

Alternatively - check duty issue - if you have owned it for more than 6 months and keep it longer than 1 year once here i think as an expat you might avoid import duty or be able to claim it back if you take it with you when you leave - don't really know but worth finding out.
