Guys,
I have bought a light front end accident damaged VW passat estate 130 sport with the PD engine in it and its on 80K miles and i dont want to assume
the previous owner changed the cam belt at the 60K mile interval.
I am having to strip down the front of the car to repair/replace some items and this is a big factor in the labour element of the job as you need to
strip the front panel out of the car to do the timing belt so i should kill 2 birds with one stone and do the belt when im repairing the car.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of some online instructions on how to change the belt?
Cheers
You could just sell it to me and save yourself the hassle.
Don't think its too bad a job once the front is off but they seem to recommend fitting a kit and not just a belt.
Yea its a kit and Just i just had van done £485 - so its worth doing your self
Have a look on tdiclub.com Col .pdf file I don't know if it's the one you want but they might have something.
It sounds a lot of work removing the front of the car to do the belt but it's designed with it mind & is'nt difficult to pull apart,
pipes & wiring etc routed in ways that help. At least it was like that on the late 90s models & they're not going to make it that much
different with the same layout on the later stuff.
The PD engine is actually simpler than the older TDI to do a belt on but I've only done them in transverse engined stuff like the Golf.
I'd agree with fitting the pullies as a kit too, I've not actually seen a belt let go on a VW that was'nt caused by a pulley breaking
up!
also worth changing water pump at the same time... driven by the timing belt and makes a bit of a mess if it fails...
As said above change the water pump aswell, common failure on PD's. I can print off the autodata instructions for you and send them on if you
like. Or i can try a screen shot but not sure thatl work.
Theres some special tools to lock the engine and a special tool for the adjuster.
Nice advice guys, I will prob get a water pump also then.
Auto data instructils would be magnificent if you could Danozeman.
Do you want a postal address or can they be emailed?
