I have just sold my tintop, but got considerably less than i wanted for it after an altercation with a tree during the snow last week, therefore my
available cash for the cheaper TDI replacement has dropped. I have found a 2001 Golf TDI 130 for the right money as it has a problem, if its a minor
fix then i don't mind giving it a go.
Taken from advert:-
THE CAR SEEMS TO BE A BIT DOWN ON POWER AT LOW REVS COMPARED TO OTHER GOLF TDI 130
I'VE DRIVEN. (WHEN THE REVS DO BUILD UP AND THE TURBO COMES IN, IT PULLS WELL)
THE CAR IS STILL DRIVABLE BUT REQUIRES SOME ATTENTION.
So what do you reckon? Could be just airfilter blocked, or could be a MAF problem (which i believe is pretty common on these)

If it was something that simple it would have been sorted by now and he'd be asking the correct amount for it. Logic says its an expensive fault that's why he's getting rid.
i would say MAF but its a simple fix i would be wary that it could be somthing more.
Easiest way would be borrow a working MAF of a 130 TDI see if it fixes it.
or did I read somwhere (on here) about if you un plug it with engine and engine note DOES not change its foo-bared

COuld be MAf, as this does not always create a fault code when it fails.
BUt as others said problems could be worse.
I guess if the price is right its worth a gamble.
(I would pay a price that at worst will allow a diy engine change, and still not having spent more than market value of the car in fully working
condition)
for what its worth, I have a skoda with the same 1.9 TDi engine and they seem pretty solid
Have you seen it started from cold and after standing overnight?
If it puffs out smoke on start-up the turbo's on its way out - cost prob. c.£500 by the time you've exchanged turbo, replaced gaskets etc.
etc.
Lack of power at low revs may indicate seals are dodgy but not such an issue when turbo's spun up.
Find another is my suggestion.

The maf would make the turbo not come in properly aswell and not show a code. But could be worth a try. take it out for a road test and try it with
it unpluged.
The mechanism for the vanes seize on the turbo aswell which will give you a similar problem.
These engines normally go for ever.
Stuck VNG vanes could certainly cause this symptom as the turbo wouldn't spool up anything like as quickly.
my VAG specialist will be along later leave us a phone number and he will help you out.....
Could also be a sticking EGR valve , cleaning with carb cleaner helps.
it sounds like the maf or the egr strip it off and put it in a buket of derv over nite or like some1 els said the turbo all are prone on mk4's.
if it is the turbo you will loose oil quick and lots off smoke out the tail pipe
try and take it out and kick it puss in and c if it inproves
