Floaty boat reliant thing
Triton - 24/3/10 at 11:02 PM

A local looney wants to turn his Reliant into a floaty boat and asked if I knew what was involved test wise.. No idea said I but I know a place that would sooooo, does anyone know if said road legal reliant would need IVA if the loon turns it into a floaty boat?

I'd be more interested to hear the conversation with the insurer

I wouldn't think so as he wouldn't be altering the chasis.

corrected, as you don't know what his plans are. if he alters the chassis, then it'll need IVA, but if unaltered then it shouldn't.

there was once a time where someone had an idea to build their own car from scratch too. wonder how similar the conversation was?

local scrappy did that to one of their shells - entered a local charity boat race with it...

Couple of 45 gallon drums glued to the sides should be enough

I saw something similar at Stoneleigh one year

The good thing with a Reliant donor (yes there is one) is that it has a ladder chassis and separate body. Keep the same engine / gearbox / axles / suspension / steering and chassis and as far as VOSA is concerned - same vehicle. Modify the body to your hearts content and MOT your "boat" and you're away.

If you made bolt on chassis extensions to support your new hull, would that be classed as a modified chassis? I'm thinking bolt on but without drilling holes in the original.

Dutton Commander?

Based on a Suzuki 4x4 with a, presumably, unmodified chassis.

I have a 14" speedboat hull if you need one! Very similar to the orange one above.
