How to setup my new garage?
Chaz - 8/4/10 at 08:56 PM

I have just moved house and i really want to get off to a good start before i move my kit car in there. Its only a single garage but with room in the rafters above for kit etc.

The first thing i want to do is paint it. Which paint is best, any colour or is white good?

From there i'm stuck, what other mods would you have in your garage? I'm open to all ideas, basics first though!

Cheers

Grey none-slip floor so you can clean oil up/reduce dust and see where you've dropped bits.

Proper lighting, ballast start lights that give off a good white light level. You can't have too much

I assume you don't fancy a spot of digging do you? (pit)

Go with white paint - better fot light.

Floor paint for sure, but thick foam mats to kneel on are a big plus!

Just been tidying up my garage, white masonry paint on the walls, a couple of luminaires with 5ft triphosphor daylight tubes, couple more spot lights above where the bench is going, the floor is sealed with pva and will be covered with the old carpet out of a mates spare bedroom.

It is also 2 1/2 ft longer with a waterproof roof and doors in the back so I can get a car through onto the patio.

Plenty of 13 amp sockets.

plenty of socket outlets all round! Maybe a couple on the rafters too.

If you have a compressor, put 1/2" copper pipe and air chucks in several places on two walls.
Properly soldered copper pipe will hold 150psi and make using air tools more convenient, Even better with 20' coiled air hose.

Kettle
Beer Fridge
Radio
Heater

That's my garage! (Except I don't have a kettle. Why do I need one when I have beer)!

....Storage!

I have an old Bisley tall metal cupboard, a 4 drawer filing cabinet, many shelves/racks etc and a lot of wall/ceiling hooks. The more stuff you can get off the floor and properly housed the better - it makes it so much more pleasant to work in.

Other than that, painted walls and floor, WiFi laptop for web/radio, fridge for refreshments and in my case the family cat who resides in the garage for reasons unknown

Toprivetguns has the right idea, walls painted white followed by naughty pictures

if your putting a workbench in there, make it so the front (or back) of the car can roll underneath it, it gives you a bit more floor space and has been a godsend in my single garage

Good helpful posts, and pictures too! Cheers guys.

Where do you get your paint? I have heard PVC mentioned, is this for a smooth floor??? I'm a massive Novice on this.

as said, walls white, Grey floor paint can be got from places like wickes.

plenty of fluorescent tubes, i have 5, 58w fluorescent tubes in my garage, and have air compressor points ,and around 10 double sockets around the garage and a few on the workbench.

and with a few pictures up, and racking, lots of storage
