We have an electric gate opener but I bought the kit for about that money. The strange thing is that as far as I know, all gate openers are Italian
and it does make you wonder if they as a nation are paranoiac over security.
I actually think I got very good value for my money. The kit included a hydraulic ram, all brackets electric lock, safety beam, remote controllers and
a really clever micro processor control unit that can even operate traffic lights among other auxilliary devices!
The great thing about it is that it works reliably every time. I do like to make as much as I can but for me, this is one piece of kit I could not
make for the money.
chap claims it can be easily adapted for a gate aswell.

For £500 a week. I'll open your gate for you
I would use a wheelchair motor.... could be got for about £30.... plus a suitable direction controller... I recon the entire thing complete with remote could be built for £200 in a weekend

yale magnetic lock job done. All will work off 12v DC so you aint got to dig up your drive to put a supply in.

If you know someone with an old 8' satellite dish, they have a motor and shaft system similar to gate closers and work on house electrics.
I have one, came with the house, yet to build the gate.
Why on earth would you need an electric gate opener. I get my wife to open the gate for me. Mind you she's not very locost either.
just remember, ive seen two companies prosecuted in the last year for killing kids with electric gates. Dont skimp on the safety aspect if you try to make one.
Day trip to Calais, cheap over here.
