I'm helping my nephew find a car and he's been attracted by the relative 'cheapness' of Cat C/D write offs. When these cars are
repaired do they have to go through any certified checks to make sure they have been repaired correctly and or road legal? Is there anything
particular to look out for?
Cheers.
I bought a Cat D Porsche 944 S2 from an insurance company, it had been stolen and recovered after payout. Only damage was the drivers door lock which
had been replaced. The one thing to check is how much documentation comes with the car, mine came with nothing but a V5. I paid £6k when good
examples were going for £12k+. The Cat D does affect resale price obviously.
Shaun.
Cat C's require a VIC check by Vosa once they are repaired.

Cat D's don't afaik.
Cat C/D affect the resale price and the amount you get from the insurance company if you are in an accident (they don't like paying out twice on
a car).
Cat C will require a VIC check and MOT before going back on the road... Cat D just an MOT.
Believe you are duty bound to inform any prospective buyer of it being a cat c/d also.
Thanks guys, that was the kind of info I was after. He's not bothered about resale as he will keep it till it dies.

What's he buying?
Don't tell Scootz or he'll probably buy the entire contents of the county that its in before you get there
Mwahahahahahahahahaha... it's mine... ALL MINE!

Note that the VIC check does not inspect any repairs for road-worthiness, it's simply an identity check to ensure the car has the same identity (i.e. to prevent ringing).
CAT-C. Needs a VIC check to get the logbook. it is a simple check to make sure the car is genuine and not a ringer. The car does need to be either
fully repaired or in the process of repair or they wont check it. You Dont need MOT/TAX or insurance if you trailer it there, if you drive it to the
test centre it needs a valid MOT and insurance but no tax is required. As soon as the check is done you can go to the DVLA and tax it. Done this on
more than one occasion.
It will be stated on the new logbook that the was a cat-c.
