When driving all seems fine but when truning left and dipping the clutch (i.e. no drive to wheels), I get a regular knock from the drivers side front
(I think). If you let the clutch out it stops.
Am I right in assuming it's the outer CV joint? And also, what's the best way to check?
Mk3 Golf BTW.
Thanks.

Hi John,
Take it you've chcked for signs of a worn wheel bearing?
Full lock, reverse slowly in tesco's car park (very important, cannot be sainsburys) and you will quickly hear the duff side
Yep, checked the wheel bearing and seems OK. One thing I did notice though, when the weight is on the wheel and I rock the wheel top and bottom I can
feel a slight knocking, but when I take the weight off the wheel it doesn't do it.
Also, when the weight is off the wheel, when I put a bar under it and lift, the whole strut moves up about 1/2" before the spring takes the
strain, and with weight on the wheel there is around 1/2" gap between the inner wing and the top of the upper strut cup (the one on top of the
inner wing). Is this normal? Both sides are the same BTW.
