Disco or Estate
mad4x4 - 20/6/10 at 10:10 PM

OK need a 2nd car to commute in

Went to look at an old Disco Mk 1 with 109K on the clock. Being a landrove man I know what to look for / at or do I be sensible and buy a rep mobile estate

Need to transport 2 dogs etc sometimes and live up a track. (Already have a ford ranger so used to 4x4 and mpg)

Budget £1500 ish
Weekly mileage = 450-500Miles

swap the dogs for 2 huskies and get a sledge

That's a lot of miles for a £1500 4x4 to be doing!

Not sure I'd want to do that sort of mileage in an old mk 1 disco, I drive TD5 and thats a bit agricultural but great for throwing dogs, bikes and kids in and not to mention great tow car.
Head says rep eatate heart says disco every time.

Scorpio Estate with all the bells and whistles for £500. Then fit LPG with the change!

Cheers,
James

Scorpio is a good one to look at.
I'd go for the estate option, the ride should br better.

i had a MK3 mondeo tddi estate a little while back, massive load space with or without the seats down, good mileage but not quite as good as the tdci's, i believe they are the same engine just deliver fuel different, the tdci's have a few issues, but the tddi' s are good so i'm told, mine had over 200k on it and still went to Spain and back loaded at 100mph there and back, or a galaxy/seat/vw the diesel is even better than the mondeo i had on fuel, and you have the high driving position like a 4x4, u can get 4x4 galaxy's as well

you'll spend over £1500 a year keeping a disco doing that sort of distance a week.

Terrible cars really. Get a passat tdi estate for £1500ish that'll do 50mpg or more too.

I'm in two minds - Problem being is that there are few diesels to under £2K to buy up here. Unless you want a Citroen or shold that start with Sh. or a Renualt megean..

All the VW diesels and Audi Diesels fetch big money are +200k miles. Quite a few go to auctions or main garages which ship them down South..

Just try autorader postcode Autotrader Link

I might just wait till end of july and see what available then.......

get an estate car. Better stability and safety. Better speed and MPG. Bigger boot, especially with the seats down. Better on road driving. Better car all round, save for driving off road. How much off road do you plan to do?

iank - 21/6/10 at 07:16 AM

Depends on the track it has to go up, but an estate is better for everything except a 'proper' farm track up a hill in winter.

My first choice would be a Scubie Legacy Estate.
Ticks the boxes for 4 wheel drive, good economy and should carry two dogs, though admittedly it doesn't have a huge carrying capacity.
Better that than lugging an extra ton around for no good reason.
