Cheap car insurers please,

List away, need to renew today

jabbahutt - 8/7/10 at 01:46 PM

Sorry to hijack but also really interested in this. Got a renewal through yesterday for my 1984 1.2 Nova merit, 4 door with a boot (no laughing) so not exactly a boy racer car.

42 years old clean licence no convictions or anything and they wanted £175

Told them to shove it

flak monkey - 8/7/10 at 01:54 PM

Direct line were always best by far for a non modded car for me.

strangely as I'm with 2tgether I tried them last night as I thought I may be able to get a low mileage policy through them.

Price came back almost exactly the same, so more expensive to insure 1.2 Nova then 2.0 MK Indy.

Can't get my head around that but there you go.

omega0684 - 8/7/10 at 02:34 PM

just got a quote from swinton of £2180!!!!!!!!!!!

For an Astra Diesel

I fully comp. insure my Alfa 156 sportwagon 2.0 through Swinton for the very reasonable (i think) sum of £275 - but then again I am an old git at 44 !

It really is a case of shop around, the wife got her insurance through Sheila's wheels underwritten by Aviva, £15 cheaper than going directly with Aviva?

You're Lindsay Lohan aren't you? Do I win the prize? Do I, do I?

mrwibble - 8/7/10 at 03:03 PM

i went back and forth between flux and another "specialist" insurer, and managed to get £60 off the initial price. always dealt with them on the phone though

flak monkey - 8/7/10 at 03:12 PM

Phone Direct Line!

I cannot believe how much you are being quoted, its silly.

I was only paying £550 to insure a Mini Cooper S which is a group 16 car with direct line 2 years ago (age 24)!

I pay around £600 for the Leon and thats modified so a heavily loaded premium.

Online quotes are generally rubbish.

speed8 - 8/7/10 at 03:20 PM

A-Plan. Been best for me for about 4 years now. Go armed with your best quote and they usually beat it...

Currently about £600 on 996 turbo with Protected NCD and £0 excess

speedyxjs - 8/7/10 at 03:20 PM

Lacaster Insurance were very cheap for me and my 'little' car.

omega0684 - 8/7/10 at 03:38 PM

some shocking results,

together= £900+
Tesco = £900+
Adrian Flux = £867
LV = 1183
RBS Direct = £1629.60
Aviva = £1273
More Than = £1471
Direct Line £1476
Swinton = £2180
Churchill = £1394
Allen & Allen = £1100
Budget = £1679

A-Plan are getting back to me!

Project7 - 8/7/10 at 03:46 PM

Elephant - always the cheapest for me.

Actually that is a very good quote.
Generally if you are above a certain & low risk the premium works out about the same no matter what you drive within reason, reasons are pretty obvious the value of your car isn't that much to do with the risk the insurance company are exposed to.

PSpirine - 8/7/10 at 06:14 PM

Personal experiences:

AA have been very good to me.. A bit dearer than direct line, but very easy to deal with.

HSBC have been good too but costs started going up significantly!

Lancaster quoted almost silly low, but couldn't insure me on a modded classic car policy due to age (23).

Fluxie happily took me on the modded classic policy, but are making me pay for it!

Went with directline once (age 22) for an e30 beamer, and I can confirm they are SUPER cheap for non-modded cars. Didn't want to insure any mods, and were almost impossible to deal with (not so much rude as just plain incompetent..)

Currently sticking with AA for daily driver, will consider Lancaster when renewal comes

There ya go, just saved you a grand!

Seriously though, with those prices, you either live in helmand province, or have done very bad things in cars in the past!

True, there appears to be a minimum. No matter what I did I couldn't get below £500 for me, on anything (even a 1989G 1.1 fiesta).
