advice on importing car from South africa
pif - 16/7/10 at 09:04 AM

I know we are an international community on here so does any one have any advice for importing a car from south africa.

The owner is migrating from SA to UK and has dual citizenship if thats relevant. Its a 18 month old Discovery.

He hopes to put it into his container, actually will it fit??

Any advice on tax, conversions etc.

Regards

Pif

He would be better off selling the Disco and putting a couple of MK1 2 door escorts in the container! Would be worth a lot more in the long run!

Actually worth more in the short term!

Probably not worth it by the time he's finished with import duty and VAT.

But the info is HERE

There is a minimum time to own the wagon before it becomes a personal import not taxable.
Ive brought in a bmw bike and a seven about 19 years ago and it was three years ownership.
Bringing a rangie back to uk mmmm bit like bringing coal to newcastle....sell it and bring back some mk1 rust free escorts.....28k on the bay
The cars we had went for a mot but i believe theres a iva test required so factor that in.
Being SA spec that shouldnt be hard as they drive on the same side.
Cheers pat.

A company I worked for exported a very large machine to SA . It was shipped in a large container. The people at the plant in SA were very helpful. The emptied the container and lined up the parts on the floor in numbered order so that our guys could assemble the machine more easily. The took a lot of careful effort to remove the rust from the parts too as the big sea water waves that soak the containers tend to soak their contents too. Be careful shipping cars in containers if you don't want them to be all brown and furry when they arrive.

If your friend fancies a holiday, why not suggest he drives it back. It's only 7000 miles.

A concern in Knysna in SA called "Frost Brothers" export a lot of stuff (classics etc) from SA. They will know the in's and out's from the SA side.

This to me sounds a bit like sending sand to the desert....Why import a 18 month Land Rover to teh UK?..If it were something like a rust free Cortina GT I'd probly understand. But er nowt as queer as folk!
