Used to weld in flip flops and shorts all the time in the tropics
Yep, same here used to weld in shorts and flip flops back in cyprus.
You knew it was sunny when you put on the welding mask (not auto-darkening), and you could actually still see what you were doing through the dark
glass!!!!
Getting a blob of weld between two toes and my flip flop was quite painful though. Not as bad as I would've imagined though
I was wearing my steel toecaps, safety first!!!
Iv done that wearing a vest. Looked like id been out in the sun all day when infact it was a warmish winter day.
Lol. What you really dont want to do, during the early stages of construction of your chassis, is to turn it up-side-down for the first time and eagerly do all the bottom tack welds just closing eyes instead of wearing a mask and having to flip it up and down every few seconds(didn't have an auto dimming one back then). Ouch. Whole face peeled a few days later
Watch American Chopper - they tack-weld without masks, just close their eyes.

Wear a pair of safety glasses if spot welding without the mask. That will stop any arc-eye.
