Removing Seam Sealer ????
couch22k - 13/8/10 at 12:54 PM

My brother is in the process of getting a Defender bulkhead ready for galvanising. He has have had it shot blasted, but it has not removed the seam sealer which he has been told makes a mess of the galvanising.

Can anyone tell me the best way to remove this sealer

Cheers

Steve

You aren't going to like this :- hot air gun, sharp chisel & wipe with cellulose thinners. At least that's how I've done it before - if anyone else know better ... ?

Sharp wood chisel, kevlar gloves, blood, sweat and tears...

Or Central Blast Cleaning, anyone else with an acid dip.

You could try silicon sealant remover to soften it up a bit

Use a wire brush drill bit to get the worst off, then set light to it!

Hot gun will make any kind of scraping a lot easier

Oxy torch...burn it and it goes crispy then scrapes off quite easily

Cold does a decent job, go down to your local welding supply, get a cooler full of dry ice and rub it over the sealer until it's good and frozen (you'll need good gloves), then whack it with a mallet and scrape the crumbs away.
