OT - tintop cracked sump
JekRankin - 16/8/10 at 11:56 AM

Hi all,

I manged to break a hole in my E30's sump at the weekend driving along a bumpy gravel track. I didn't hear anything at the time, but a mile or so down the road, I noticed the oil lamp flickering.

I pulled over straight away and noticed the drips from underneath. The oil level had dropped off the level of the dipstick. Argh!

I've had the car recovered, and the hole looks fairly small so hopefully it can be patched without too much difficulty.

My question is, is there anything I can do or watch out for to check for signs of engine damage, or is it just a case of fill it back up with oil and see how it runs?

Cheers,
Jek

Fill it back up and then just keep an eye open for any blue smoke and an ear for any knocks or rattles. Beyond that only a strip down would show anything. If you've got decent oil in it and the light only flickered then you should be OK.

As you stopped as soon as the oil light flickered you should be ok.
If you have an oil pressure gauge you see if it runs at the right pressure.
If not then as long as the oil light stays off you should be ok.
I would check the sump for bits, and do a full oil & filter change.

Thanks for the advice guys. It was only budget oil unfortunately, but it was reasonably fresh. Fingers crossed!
