Glow plug extraction

I'm trying to sort out my brothers saab 93 and all of the glow plugs are shafted, the nut on them just spins when you try and take them out, seems that the previous owner made a pig's ear out of it.

Anyone got any tips to try and get them out? If it's a job for the pros can it be done with the cylinder head still on or is it a case of taking the head off and taking it to a machine shop?

What nut? Glow plugs screw out like spark plugs so if it's just spinning then the tread is probably stripped and I think it's a head off job.

It's not an actual nut, it's part of the glow plug and it looks like a nut (i.e. you can get a spanner/socket round it), I'm no good at describing anything technical

My Saab's petrol, so not familiar wiith the model, but glow plugs can be VERY tight/siezed.
So unless there is some body you can get a mole wrench or stilson on, or a easyout into then machineing/drilling may be the only option. At which point you really need the head off

Are you sure nut is spinning on the glow plug?
Could it be it has come unscrewed but is just jammed in the hole by carbon and needs a good yank to get it free.

Yeah, I can see about 2 or 3 threads where they've started to come out of the cylinder head, and those threads aren't moving
