I'm having some issues with my tintop at the moment.
It's a Volvo S60 D5 (2003) on 130k miles.
I've had some issues in the last 6 months that seem to roll into one another.
The current run started with a knackered intercooler, which had expanded and burst on the bottom row (a common fault). This was duely replaced.
Shortly afterwards, my clutch has started to slip quite badly - I put this down to the intercooler being fixed and the turbo coming back into play
properly, putting stress on the next link in the chain, being the clutch in this case. I haven't had this fixed yet as it costs mega bucks to do
(Main Stealer wants £1200 for the job, local garage won't touch it ). It's not a job I can really tackle myself as I don't have the
special clutch tool or the facilites to remove the gearbox safely.
Most recently it's developed a whine to the engine. It's linked to the revs on the engine, not the gearbox as it does it when in neutral or
clutch disengaged.
This causes me some worries that the urbo is going to go pop. The whine comes in at low revs, below the normal boost level so it shouldn't be
the case, but it is a worry.
My other thought is that it's linked to the dual mass fly wheel, which would spin with the engine rather than gearbox.
It also has a little lag when the revs are dropping (ie, the whine goes up with the revs, but is slightly slower to come down). Again, this coule be
either the DMF or the turbo.
Anyone have any ideas?
PS - if there's any way it could be a £5 part rather than £1200, that would make my day!
Can't help with the issue but if it's the clutch/DMF then you'll have to break open the piggy bank.
I've just had the clutch/DMF/Slave Cylinder replaced on her X-type because it was slipping really badly (to be fair it had done 110k miles on the
original). Cost was about £300 for labour, £550 for parts plus VAT. They had the car overnight as it's a pretty big job and there's no
pattern parts so it has to be all OEM from Jag.
Job was done by a Jag indy.
From what I hear, when I looked into the costs, it wouldn't be much cheaper on a Mondeo.
If the D5 is based on the Ford block then I can imagine the costs will be similar. You may save a couple of hundred if you find a specialist to do it.
I doubt the whine would be coming from the flywheel. The only way it would be doing that is if the 2 bits wernt attached anymore even then itd be a
grating and you would have no drive.
The whine could be the alternater. If the freewheel clutch has knackered and letting the alt spin freely.
Can you get the the turbo so you can take pipe off and spin it??
