new car ideas please!
daniel mason - 11/9/10 at 06:14 PM

i am after changing cars soon and dont know what to go for. i am open to almost anything within reason and have no specific criteria other than reliability!
i would consider, petrol or diesel, small cars or large cars, sporty or comfortable, anything considered within a £6k budget.
basically im asking; if you had £6k to spend on a car, what would you get? cheers

Alpina b10 3.2 manual.

mercedes CL500 or CL600,w or x reg so getting the cheaper tax, space, looks comfort, speed when needed, looks a hell of a lot more than a 6k car, one on autotrader now at 5k

You could buy one for 5-6k, then sell it on for the same when you fancy a change again

Free motoring!

Linky and would still give you £5k to play with

Right noe, me personally?

I'd be looking for a previous shape 330i coupe converted for LPG - lots of car, plenty quick enough and cheap motoring on LPG

Would I do it again? Not if I were doing lots of mileage. They seem to have reached the age where general wear and tear requires regular work - at not insignificant cost unless you do it yourself. I think I'd try an E36 M3 next time - just a bit more of a B-road car.

Common misconception. The only cost advantage is the road tax. You still need to put unleaded in it, as well as the LPG.

I had two transit vans through work for our mobile guys, and worked out that they cost us more on fuel and that we were only marginally better off by avoiding congestion charges and tax.

i've run a few LPG cars, and they have been much cheaper to run than even the diesel of the same model, putting LPG on my pickup to ship back to the uk, mind you 7.4 v8 needs something to help its drinking problem!!

Cadillac BLS. I'll admit you'd probably have to by a high miler to get one for 6K but I think they look amazing and it's all Saab underneath, get a Diesel and you get a loverly Alfa 1.9 unit which should be resonable on fuel.

For reliability ------------ an Avensis

Only thing to look out for is piston slap at 70,000 miles plus dosen't happen if car has been run with 5w/30 in the sump.

As for LPG how much you save depends on the price of LPG in your area in my area it is 49p to 59p per litre. I think the NW is about the same . I save 17 pounds per 250 miles on the Rover 75 1.8

In contrast South East England they charge at least 10p more per litre.

Toyotas need a valve saver kits fitted to run on LPG.

Another one to consider is a Rover 75 find a very good low mileage petrol one below 3k --- and bank the change.
Low mileage diesel ones are rarer but even from a dealer you should find one with less than 60k the clock

Take a look at this one ebay item 280560295581 25k miles on the clock --- just under 6K

My debit card must be under the misconception then that I saved over a £1000 on fuel last year.

LPG Autogas prices vary massively accross the UK in my area I can buy at 49p per litre.
