What estate car for my Mum?
TimC - 16/9/10 at 04:19 PM

Afternoon.

My Mum is looking to change her car. She needs something capable of carrying up to four dogs albeit on shortish journeys only, (two dogs more frequently); preferably without dropping the back seats.

She has about £5k to spend. It needs to be smart, have EW, A/C etc but does not need to be in any way a performance vehicle. It needs to be reliable and reasonable to service. I was thinking a 318 E46 Touring but these appear to be like rocking horse poo with low mileage (<50k only please.)

Dad wanted her to have a C-Max, but while the volume of the boot is massive, the footprint is too small.

What do the LBs Massive think?

How big are the dogs? The difference between 4 dachsunds and 4 St Bernards is quite large

mad4x4 - 16/9/10 at 04:30 PM

Skoda - Fabia or Octavia Diesel- 50 MPG !

stevebubs - 16/9/10 at 04:33 PM

Mondeo.

I'd say Vectra but they're prone to problems.

mikeb - 16/9/10 at 04:35 PM

Saab 9-5 estate diesel

Agriv8 - 16/9/10 at 04:41 PM

Octavia Diesel- 50 MPG = Audi A4 with a different badge if you are not a brand snob.

Passat estate if you can find one

regards

Agriv8

£9-£11k on a dealer forecourt

Mahoosive boot space although (as with most cars) these days you'll need to protect the paint on the rear bumper with dogs scrabbling in/out everyday.

fesycresy - 16/9/10 at 08:19 PM

Do not buy the C Max whatever you do.

Mate has one and he nurses it everywhere, he's only getting 28 to the gallon

A bit left field but how about an older Land Rover Disco TDi maybe, £2k tops ?

seriously considering a transit as my next 'car' not got much to carry, but light (when empty) cheap to buy, being diesel, whats the road tax like on them?
living so close to the river, any car i get turns to rust in a year need something i don't need to car too much about

My dad bought a pickup truck when he had dogs to move around (Then parents had a baby and got rid of the truck and dogs). Massive space for the dogs and completely seperated from you so you can't smell them. They're slightly out of fashion at the moment so very cheap compared to when my dad bought his.

I would definately avoid the 3 series "estate" as it really isn't one. The bootspace is pretty small. More of a "tourer"

I rate the mondeo, good value, well built etc. Can't go far wrong......

It was a bad case of over supply about 8 saloons and 10 estates all Silver.
