I road tested a 2000 Porsche Boxster 3.2 S today, I thought it was great, but I don't want to get carried away. They wanted £7,500 with service history and 92k on the clock. Any comments on the Boxster S, experiences good or bad, are they worth owning or a non-starter. Comments please.

I see you say 'they' which suggest it's a dealer.

If it is a dealer, then you will be paying quite a bit more for than you
would if you were buying privately.

I don't know of any reason why you shouldn't buy that make model and year of car, though.

PPC did a review of these as second hand performance vehicle a while back.

The only downer (as far as I remember) were costs of spares, and the lack of availability of certain engine parts.
You may be able to get it as a back issue.

Brother has one, only problem he has had was a fault with the roof, £200 to sort but excellent apart from that.

Have a read up on IMS failures on these cars, can be very expensive

if you want reliability walk away. if you have wads of cash or dont mind getting the spanners out then they can be quite a bit of fun.

there are a lot of other cars out there on the market which are a lot more fun and more reliable.

if its going to be a daily driver dont bother. it will hurt and it wont be fun.

Weirdly I test drove a 2003 boxster s today too!

Thought it was a nice car, I think the dealer was over pricing it a bit at 15k even with the low mileage of 35k

Felt well built and sounded good but I was a bit disappointed at the power, I was expecting something a bit more brutal. Did enjoy driving it tho.

Can't comment on ownership first hand but did start looking for buyers guides today and they don't seem to have any major issues but had also heard that engine spares (internals) can be difficult to get hold of.

And you need a hoist for a lot of the engine work, since there is not a lot of access from above.

My Audi A4 Avant costs a fortune to maintain (just spent $1100 on a driver window actuator and towing harness installation), and I can't imagine what a Porker would be. Thought of it many times myself however.

Great cars! It shouldn't give you any more problems than most similarly performing 10 year old vehicles would!

Rear main seal failure is the infamous achilles-heel on these... cheap part to replace, but takes about 5 hours! A new fitting tool was developed a few years back which increased the longevity of these, so not the problem it was.

And at that age don't go near a Porsche service centre! Plenty of independents out there who will keep it ticking over at sensible money.
