Racing in the street

Rules barring motor races on public roads may be eased

The restrictions on holding motor races on public roads across Britain could be eased by the new government.

The change would allow councils to hold races, or festivals, on city streets or on rural hill roads, a Conservative conference fringe meeting heard.

Good idea assuming the "elf 'n' safety" crowd don't put the kibosh on it.

Sounds like a great Idea but I'll hold my breath.

M25 endurance racing anyone?

James - 5/10/10 at 10:27 PM

Maybe this is Boris wanting a London F1 race!

owelly - 5/10/10 at 10:56 PM

Better idea. The M6 toll road. Use the toll as a start point

Surrey Dave - 6/10/10 at 06:58 AM

Don't like racing on any street circuit, horrible point and squirt type corners, more like a high speed carnival.

More like the wacky racers!!

r1_pete - 6/10/10 at 07:33 AM

Racing on UK roads!!! what with, Tractors? about the only things which will cope with the state roads are in!!

balidey - 6/10/10 at 08:12 AM

Imagine doing LEJOG but in the style of the Mille Miglia

MikeR - 6/10/10 at 08:45 AM

oooh, now that would be an endurance race - now would London complain as its not involved? (or a heck of a detour if it is)

boggle - 6/10/10 at 09:18 AM

this could open up some real nice hillclimbs down this way.....

Whoever said an endurance race had to be fast? That would be hillarious - a "race" where the drivers have to endure the M25 at rush-hour.

I know of pleanty of roads around here (Maidstone and surrounding area) that would be excellent for hillclimbs and sprint stages. Maybe even some for head-to-head racing...

Agreed, know of some cracking sprint and hill climb roads.

The MSA has been pressing this for a while and getting people to persuade local authorities it's a good idea.

Over in Northern Ireland, most of our hill climbs are on closed public roads, they're unreal to do, also we have several road closing orders, all are used for motorbike racing or rallying, there is only a set amount of these and they've been around for many many years. Hope it happens in the mainland aswell.

loggyboy - 6/10/10 at 10:12 AM

I would hope that this more aimed at Rallying, as madrally mentioned, NI do these regularly, but all our rallys (including ralyl GB) has to be closed private roads. Which sucks. I think we're pretty much the only country that wont allow road closures.

It always pi$$es me off that cycle races are allowed to close roads but heaven forbid trying to do the same for a motor sport event using vehicles that actually pay for the roads !!
Apart from the Isle of Mull of course where they welcome the events and the income they generate.

I don't really believe the Nanny State will ever allow such a thing. Even if they do, the legions of the Wrinklies, Undead and NIMBYs will soon be shouting from their TV rooms (or this just a S. West thing).

...still hoping I'm allowed a good tar barrel burning... some hope.

Surrey Dave - 6/10/10 at 03:19 PM

Indy cars round the M25?

perksy - 6/10/10 at 05:43 PM

They'll need to have a real good look to find some decent roads without Potholes..

Its bad enough for us lot in 7's

Imagine being in a single seater

Richard Quinn - 6/10/10 at 06:38 PM

There's an annual one not far from me...

It's alright, although going back through Birmingham would be a bit of a let down.

I've thought up loads of courses over my time of random driving, I could probably hold an event a week myself...
