Car broken into
PSpirine - 24/10/10 at 11:12 PM

My micra was broken into (visiting Manchester... what did I expect ). They took the satnav out the glovebox, but ditched the stereo after they couldn't get it out (god bless the micra's proper head unit mounting!).

Anyways, aside from fury, two things:

1) I need to replace the glass or the whole door (not bothered about colour etc.) ASAP as it's still got all my ICE in it, which I can't easily remove. It's in a private underground carpark at the moment wedged against another car but still obviously open!

Anyone around manchester have a Micra door or glass by any chance? I'm somewhat restricted by the fact that I have work all week long during the day so can't go scouring scrappies etc.

2) Starting to regret the "home" function on my satnav as the bastards can now find where I live. Granted it's 120 miles away so unlikely to attract them and it's in a very private court, but something worth keeping in mind when storing your address - I now realise that storing an address that's just down the road from yourself is a far better idea!!

Overall, not a happy bunny, as I had enough stuff to sort out without spending three hours freezing my balls off trying to get enough glass out the car so I could actually get in and move it.

Obviously not claiming anything on insurance which just angered me more. The amount I pay for insurance, and they're not even someone that helps in a time like this (premium + excess will leave me out of pocket if I claim)

iceman26 - 24/10/10 at 11:20 PM

no good got a k12 glass sorry

Ninehigh - 24/10/10 at 11:23 PM

Problem is even though home is 120 miles away, they know you're not there...

PSpirine - 24/10/10 at 11:27 PM

Not really, there's a car parked outside the house anyway, and the micra was parked in the city centre and is now moved from where it was (so it's quite likely that i'm back home now!)

Happened to me in manc, vw golf, foot in the middle of the door swung off the top of the window frame until it folded and stole the conents of the glove box (bag of mint imperials and a wooly hat)

Fortunately the glass survived, so put my foot in the middle of the door card and bent it back until it sealed.

I think there is alot for removing any tell tail sat nav circles from your screen and leaveing the glove box open with nowt in it

There are some breakers yards just outside the city centre, I will have a quick ring round this lunch time and see what I can find in terms of a door with glass or just the glass.

There is an item on eBay located in Bolton. Only a short drive from Manchester. Item number 260675569967.

Feckers

Often the damage is the easiest part to deal with, the fury on the other hand takes some while to subside in my experience - must be the fact you can't get hold of the little scrootes and explain it to them

If you just need to get home, then some clear polythene gaffa taped on and slammed in the door WILL get you home. It WON'T be a pleasant or quiet drive though. Had to recover my old Escort from Abergele police station, (North Wales) after it got nicked in Broughton (Manchester) and used in a robbery

Drivers window smashed
Door cards inc. speakers ripped out
Parcel shelf inc. speakers ripped out
Head unit ripped out
Ignition barrel smashed (coppers said "bring a scredriver"
Back seat full of Maccy D wrappers and food
Car plastered in finger print dust
Tax disc missing
Rear view mirror ripped off

Poly'd and taped the window up and drove from Abergele to Winchester (Hampshire) in January. Chuffing cold, noisey and miserable

Never claimed claimed, just fixed it up as best I could and drove it for another 2 years - never bothered with another stereo, left the glve box permanently open, no parcel shelf, empty boot...etc.

I feel for you

The rage will subside but the memory always stays

cliftyhanger - 25/10/10 at 08:53 AM

correct me if I am wrong, but a glass claim isn't too bad? didn't think it affected NCB and an excess of £50??? or have things changed?

PSpirine:

just sent you U2U.

I have found a door glass at a breakers a couple of miles outside the city centre.

Worth giving them a ring yourself just to check before you set off.

adithorp - 25/10/10 at 09:32 AM

Your welcome to use my workshop to fix/store it if you want. 6 miles out from city centre, but there's a train station 2mins walk away. i've got a contact for glass fitting as wellif you want.

Good on you adithorp and DanG - the power of the LCB community

mistergrumpy - 25/10/10 at 10:14 AM

Out of interest. Is the car being stored in Manchester still? I work in Salford and if you're leaving it there I can give it a bit of passing attention during the day this week with the police van?

NigeEss - 25/10/10 at 10:57 AM

Put your "home" as the local cop shop !

PSpirine - 25/10/10 at 03:58 PM

Thanks everyone for the responses! Never ceases to amaze me what a community this place is.

Adrian, many thanks for you mate, hopefully will give you a call tomorrow.

DanG, cheers, I called them, unfortunately by the time I managed to get a few minutes to ring them they'd already sold it! Tomorrow will try a few other scrappies, otherwise it'll have to endure another night and then go back to Glos on wednesday where at least there's a locked garage it can sleep in!

I'm fairly certain that insurance only covers windscreen as a non-claim!

mistergrumpy, thanks for the offer but I think it's in as good a place as it can be at the moment (locked underground private apartment car park wedged up close to another car that I know the owner of).

Might be a chilly drive down to Glos on wednesday if I don't sort it tomorrow! Will keep me awake if nothing else I guess.

What bleeping numpty takes the sat nav but doesn't take the head unit, tweeters, amps, etc. etc. (granted the amps aren't immediately visible but still!).

Oh well, not much I can do about it now!

Others have had it worse. Nothing a pint can't fix

Cheers again everyone

I had my car broken into in the 'secure' parking inside my flat building.

Got the glass replaced by insurance approved (most big companies are approved) company and I only had to pay the glass excess which for me was £40 (was a £80 job). You dont lose your no claims bonus but I think it might not go up another year when you come to renew.

Worth checking as a breakers will probably charge you the same.

PSpirine - 27/10/10 at 09:27 PM

Just wanted to say a public thank you once again to Adrian and Dan for their help.

Adrian, tried to call your earlier but couldn't get a connection, I feel it may be my signal!

Ended up picking up some glass at a scrappy in oldham (got massively ripped off, but the next one down wanted the exact same amount!), and drove back to Glos and just fitted it now.

Must say, it's a fiddlier job than I was expecting (not pleasant at all..) and the amount of glass everywhere in the car is absolutely mental!

Checked with insurance, excess would have been £50 on it, and I wouldn't want to risk that affecting my premiums in any sort of way - glass was cheaper than that, plus no risk of AutoGlass man accidentally damaging my speaker install in the doors.

Good night all!
