I saw that this morning.

The only new technology really is the tailgating thing which i actually think is quite a good idea (im a slow driver most of the time)

Whats the law about tailgating? is there a set distance? is the 2 second rule law?

If it comes in it will generate a fortune. I often see 4 cars bunched up together in what should be the 2 second gap.

Plus that will mean when I'm trundling along coming up behind the truck in front going 1kph faster I'll have to pull out sooner and pull back in later, all with an Audi or BMW inspecting the undercarriage of the back of my trailer......

I agree that both of these are annoying. Middle lane hogs could be picked up be any of the current multilane average speed ANPRs but untill its illegal to be in the middle lane how to you police this?
Tailgating is dangours and not very well policed, but if the police randomly pulled 200 cars that come right up your arse before overtaking a day they would soon back off, trailer full of cameras or not.

You have to penalise someone if there caught, else there is no point. Well, theres room for warnings, but if there nothing to follow they mean nothing.

So if its not finantial loss, its points isnt it. Which again isnt an issue unless you get randomly get caught a couple of times and loose your job over it.

I did four years driving clean and then got 11 points within a year without changing my driving style.

Fair enough for one of the offences where i was caught well over limit, on my own road, going to tescos more than a little over exuberantly for which i got 5points and Ł175 +fees.

However the other two where remedial FPNs. One for doing 71 on an empty fourlane section of M5 at 1am with a light trailer, having done 60 for the previous two hours and following four hours. Devon and summerset unmarked car.

And the other 60 in a temp 50 on a dual carrage way, unmanned roadworks on a saturday afternoon, no other cars about, missjudge my speed due to broken speedo cable in the kitcar. Portable northwales gatso.

I drive a van which does 0-60 in about 3 days, I can quite happily trot along at the national speed limit (if road conditions permit), what I can't do is overtake queues of cars all following one muppet doing 45mph.

I believe part of the driving test is "making progress" which includes driving at the speed limit if safe to do so.

Drive at 45mph and I will tailgate you (although you'll have to come to Fife)

The quickest way to neutralise middle-lane hoggers is to do what they do in the USA and Australia - allow overtaking on both sides.

I'm not sure if it's legal in Australia, but everyone does it, all the time!

Not quite the same thing but anyone who has driven in France and/or Germany may have noticed that when they overtake, they pull back in even if there is another slower car a little way up the road. Seemed alot easier driving without tailgaters and with a nearly clear fast lane

would like to see it work on the m25 in the morning. it never moves fast enough to be anything other than bumper to bumper.

i think its time a rebellion was started. there seems to be a minority of do gooders that are too scared to go out the front door and live life that are pushing all this crap on us when the majority don't want it. I personally would just like to be left alone.

they say its for the greater good but they are just turning the country into a prison with 24 hour surveillance everywhere

Is tail gating actually illegal? I know it's dangerous and annoying but I didn't think it was specifically illegal. I don't think catching seat belt violations with cameras is a good plan because there's too much potential for mistakes but I do agree with having more ANPR cameras to catch people who aren't taxed/MOTed/Insured and I think every police car should have one.

Cameras aren't the answer though. A policeman driving up and down the road would make it alot safer than a camera and could actually educate people rather than just ticket them.

I find the worst places for being tailgated are 30 limits where idiots must be speeding to catch up with you anyway, which is worse than the usual catching up with 6 idiots doing 40 on a completely straight bypass (I'm with the guy in Fife on that one, from town to my house I either have to wait ages at 'temp' lights or take a slight detour down the bypass which these days has loads of other people detouring on it who don't seem to know the speed limit is 60).

What's wrong with a system that gets untaxed, uninsured, unmot'd cars off the road? It's about time cameras were used for real offences, not slight attention slips of good drivers (got done for 36 in 30 recently but did speed awareness)

thank god i drive in the US now and not the UK, and when i come over to the UK i use my American licence (keeps UK licence nice and clean), its getting silly now, what ever next,

i got cought doing 71 in a 55 limit in america in my 18 wheeler, the copper dropped the speed to 65 so i didn't get any points, and it made the ticket just $10 (Ł6.50),
