when i start the vivaro in the morning, the stop light on the dash, and the handbrake warning light, both stay on for a few minutes when driving, and they stay on forever if you leave it idling. They also come on together when engine braking down a hill. When its cold it feels like its misfiring too. Mechanic says there is a code for an injector leak, but i cant see what this has to do with the handbrake warning light? Can anyone think what this might be?

I cant believe i have two vans and they are both buggered

I know fiats have a problem with the brake fluid reservior being low but when you look insude, the fluid level looks fine as the mesh in the cap get blocked. It may be worth undoing the brake reservior and taking the mesh out and seeing what the level is like.

thats a good call speedy, i did check the level but didnt lift the mesh out! Its does brake fine though, albeit the pads are low.

My Citroen Dispatch had the same light (handbrake light on) used to come on going around corners and prompt accelerating / braking. I thought it would be fluid (cos of it coming on during cornering), but topping up the fluid didn't help. Turned out its was the brake pad warning lamp telling me to change the pads.

Might have wear sensors that could also set it off.

I had never heard of this problem until i did a clutch job on a fiat van and wondered why the light kept coming on when i accellerated and went off when i braked

I know they are prone to the rear pads seizing. I often see my neighbour dragging his up the road like a lame dog on a cold morning!
I have a long shot for the mis-firing too. As the van was a joint venture with renault, is the 1.9 a vauxhall or renault unit? I only ask because my old renault scenic 1.9 diesel suffered the same symptoms. It kept flashing "injector fault" and would stammer occasionally. It turned out to be a cheap plastic pipe rather than a proper fuel line within the engine bay. It had worn a tiny perforation in the side causing air bubbles in the fuel feed. Annoying but a cheap job to fix.

Warning lights are no longer descriptive.

My fabia had the glow plug light flashing along with a steady on engine management light. That was code for a faulty brake light switch. (it was too, I sorted it and they went off)

Go figure.........................

Yeah, my VW T4 does a similar thing, glowplug light flashes when there's a problem with the rear lights. If you did'nt have the handbook how would you ever know?!

thats well stupid if its true, there's surely people out there who would pull over if they saw a stop light on the dash - imagine how annoyed they'd be if they found it was just a warning that the pads were wearing thin!

Thanks for the pointers, i think i'll change the pads and see what the lights do. Suspect it will need the misfire sorting too though

A bit late now Joel, but don't buy a Vivaro. Good when they are running, but they don't half break down a lot.
