Mixing Antifreeze?
fha772 - 29/11/10 at 10:10 AM

Right then, i was out yesterday, when i returned home, my dad told me he'd drained the header tank and refilled it with antifreeze, on my car and had it running, just to make sure.

The thing is, he's added 3-4 litres of blue antifreeze, when my Audi has red/pink antifreeze already in it.

Is it going to be OK, for the time being, or do i need to go and drain it, and refill it.

I'd rather not be doing it in 4 inch of snow, but if i have to, then so be it.

Cheers Frank.

Thanks, I'll get it drained in the next couple of days...

You can mix the blues and greens but not the pink/reds. It turns to jelly so you need to drain, flush and refill asap.

"Mixing IAT with OAT, HOAT or NOAT antifreezes will not damage your vehicle’s cooling system; however the mixture will negate the long life/extended life attributes of these formulations."

More importantly mixing IAT and OAT significantly degrades the corrosion protection.

Just try it. I drained the blue stuff out of my Alfa and poured some fresh red into it. Within 15 minutes, the whole lot had turned to gloopy jelly.

Well, I've been and checked it, and drained some out, it seems fine, and we've run it, so it all seems ok for now...

As far as I know-blue for iron blocks and red for alloy.
