If you consider that the R5 1.4T Maxi used to produce 300+ BHP 20 years ago, i am sure it is doable.

BMW had a 1500BHP 1.5 turbo formula 1 engine, that's not a typo either!!!!!

They'll do it on low boost.....................

This is the worst bit.

[i/The new engines will not do more than 10,000 revs per minute - current F1 engines spin at 18,000rpm.

A four pot turbo restricted to 10,000rpm is not the soundtrack of F1.

Oh for the Ferrari V12, or any of the V10 when they went to 20,000rpm.


F1 has to sound like F1.

Maybe if they had allowed V6 engines.
They can sound good.

They should allow complete freedom of engine design and just limit the amount of fuel allowed. ( Colin Chapman's idea not mine) It might even result in some overtaking.

I am lectured by a guy who designed quite a few F1 engines. In the turbo era he had a compound turbo engine which produced 4000+ hp (1.something litre), when the F.I.A. Heard of this they lowered the boost pressure from 8 bar to 4 bar, so he chargecooled the 8bar charge down to 4bar, massively increasing the density and still had 2000hp.

It's already been done basically

Thats what they do it MotoGP limit the amount of fuel you can carry for the race to 21l. There will be other restrictions such as 4 stroke and exotic metals etc, but seems to work ok for them and the difference in engines means there is variations in speeds down the straights leading even more overtaking.

Ok in which case surely we should be able to go the other way and get a normal amount of power along with some serious economy (and bear in mind I'm used to 40-60mpg from my Mondeo)
